March 2011

Experts differ, but most agree that approximately 1 in 3 Caucasians and 1 in 2 Hispanics and African Americans born after 2000 will become Type 2 Diabetics. The CDC estimates that the number of Diabetic Americans will double or triple in 3 to 4 decades. Why? Because Diabetes is lifestyle, diet, and exercise preventable; yet, the junk food and fast food advertisers as well as the talking heads on T.V. are seducing a new generation into the very choices that will insure a high Diabetic rate. That’s the main reason. You have probably been told that Diabetes is incurable. This is wrong. Diabetes doesn’t just appear out of thin air usually goes through stages.
STAGE 1 – Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar occurs subtly and some of the symptoms are irritability, lightheadedness, or headaches if meals are missed, shaky or jittery, tremors, blurred vision, craving sweets, and easily being upset. If diet and lifestyle changes are made at this stage, it will usually not progress to the next stage.

STAGE 2 – Insulin Resistance – high blood sugar results after insulin receptor sites shut down, usually from a long period of hypoglycemia, and now insulin has fewer receptor sites to bind with. This is the pre- diabetic state. Some of the symptoms are fatigue after meals, sweet cravings not relieved by eating sweets, weight gain around the waist, low energy, frequent urination, increased thirst and urination.

STAGE 3- DIABTETES

These conditions can be caught and stopped in their tracks with a proper functional blood work and metabolic assessment. 1 in 4 Americans are either pre-Diabetic or Diabetic. Diabetes shortens your lifespan. It also increases your risk of cardiovascular problems including heart attack and stroke as well as the risk of Alzheimer’s, High Blood Pressure, Dental Disease, Pregnancy Complications, Neuropathy, and even Blindness. Diabetics are also being misled to take Statin drugs (another subject). The sad part, according to the Boston Hearald, is that 15% of families don’t want dietary advice because it is not paid for by insurance companies. I can personally attest that for so many people the buck stops with the insurance company. Very unfortunate and very bad for their health and future.

In America, we now have no choice but to take care of our own health. The so called insurance companies will only pay for crisis or sick care. There is nothing “health” about health insurance. They should rename it and tell you what it really is. We are on our own when it comes to staying healthy and staying out of the sick care American system.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Are you easy going or neurotic?
Well here are some personality tips that will help you in choosing the best way to exercise based on your personality.

The AMBITIOUS exerciser: The driven individual tends to do best when exercising alone weather it is at the gym, jogging, swimming or whatever. Establish your set of rules and set times for workouts and just follow YOUR lead.

The IMPULSIVE exerciser: These people are free spirits and don’t like to be held to schedules, times, and routines. They don’t make promises, don’t plan, and may not show up at all. These people are more likely to do exercises that give them the “runner’s high” and this buzzed feeling is probably the only thing that will keep them exercising.

The SOCIAL exerciser: “People persons” have trouble doing boring solo exercises and will thrive in aerobics or spin classes. They will enjoy bicycle clubs and swim clubs where they can see and be seen.

The LAID BACK exerciser: These non-competitive folks do not like to sweat and huff and puff. The will do well in yoga and golf.

The STRESSED OUT exerciser: These people need exercise more than anyone. Worry worts need stress and anxiety relief and greater emotional stability. You should have a plan and lay out your exercise goals and stick to the plan. Peak performance exercises where you go all out and achieve the maximum safer heart rate are wonderful for the type A personalities.

The ADRENALINE JUNKIE exerciser: Do I need to explain this? Extreme skiing, zip lines, bungee jumping…….you get the picture. Try to be a little safer and mimic the stressed out exerciser. It won’t give you the rush but you will live longer!

Many of you may have heard of Jim Fixx who basically began the “runners high” revolution in the 70’s. Jim was slim and trim and ran 8-20 miles a day. He died suddenly of a heart attack at, I believe, age 52. Just a few years ago Alberto Salazar, another world class runner nearly died of a heart attack at age 49. Researchers have studied older men who are -or were- olympians, runners, rowers, and other high output athletes. The disturbing results are that HALF of these guys have scarring of the heart. Those affected were those who had gone through the longest and hardest training (like those who ran over 100 marathons). Studies on rats showed similar results. Unfortunately, there are no guidelines for who is most at risk or how much is too much exercise.
What does this mean for you? Probably nothing since most of you are not over-training. You should exercise daily 20-30 minutes even if is just walking or jumping on a re-bounder. You will feel better, sleep better, lose weight, and avoid insulin resistance (pre-diabetes). Also the key to beating depression is through the legs, so when you get the blues – exercise, because it produces serotonin which is the feel good neurotransmitter.

Don’t forget that regular chiropractic adjustments help boost immune systems, prevents injuries, balance neurotransmitters resulting in mood stabilization.

Be well by choice, not by chance!

Sleep, sweet sleep. As those who know me can attest, this is my favorite topic. Studies have been conducted showing photos of sleep study participants to members of the opposite sex. The study compared people after 8 hours of perfect sleep to those having missed a whole nights  sleep. The subjects were told not to use any makeup or hair care for the photos. Those rating attractiveness and youth rated the sleeping subjects an average of at least 1 point higher (scale of 10) on the scales of youthfulness and attractiveness. The average was close to 2 points higher. For the vain among you, this should be enough. For those who are truly interested the the health effects that lead to a more attractive and youthful appearance, consider the following:

(1) Heart Disease and Diabetes – too much or too little sleep have been significantly linked to Heart Disease and Type 2 Diabetes.

(2) Cancer – disruption in sleep cycles have caused hormonal changes that effect melatonin release and has been related to tumor growth

(3) Weight – disruption of sleep cycles lead to dys-regulation of appetite and satiation hormones leading to weight gain.

(4) Immune Resistance – Proper sleep boosts the immune system and decreases your chances of viral infections.

(5) Memory and Learning – Proper sleep help regulate neurotansmitters leading to better short term memory and creativity.

Chronic Conditions that are aggravated by lack of sleep include: Depression, Anxiety, GI problems, Headaches, Memory Loss, Learning and Behavioral Problems, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Kidney Disease, and Hypertension.

PRICELESS SLEEP TIPS: (1) Make sure your bedroom is completely dark (2) Go to bed between 9pm and 11 pm every night. Tinker with the time until the right time for you is obvious (for me it is 9:30 -10:00pm) (3) Don’t watch TV or use computers for the last hour before bedtime and instead read inspirational literature (4) Pee before you sleep to decrease the possibility of waking up in the night (5) Use full spectrum light bulbs at the office or during the day to maximize light stimulation (6) Use low spectrum (blue) light bulbs at night or in the bedroom to promote sleepiness (7) DON’T work alternating shifts or NIGHT shifts as this is probably the worst thing in the world for normal circadian sleep.

Randomized, controlled studies have shown that zinc, when taken at the very beginning of cold symptoms can reduce the duration of the common cold by at least 24 hours. In fact, studies have also shown that when taking zinc for 5 months, there is a reduction of school absenteeism  as well as a reduction in prescription antibiotics. Of course, eating right, sleeping well, exercising, and optimizing Vitamin D3 will also be preventative. Caution should be taken in taking zinc lozenges due to possible side effects. Lozenges are made with artificial flavors and binding agents that can alter effectiveness. The known side effects are: nausea, bad taste in the mouth, and interference with mineral uptake. Zinc is not recommended for those suffering from lowered immune function, chronic illness, or asthma unless under the supervision of a health professional.

The dangerous side effects of over-the-counter cold medications such as Tylenol and aspirin suppress the body’s natural ability to produce antibodies to destroy the cold virus. A short term, non-lozenge zinc supplementation should be fine.

It is best to get your zinc from a well balanced diet. Fresh organic meats such as beef, turkey, lamb, salmon, and chicken fit the bill. Trace minerals, including zinc, are in fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. Other good sources are raw cheese, raw milk, yogurt, beans, and kefir made from raw milk. Don’t take massive doses of zinc when fighting a cold – 50-60 mg per day will do – and you can stop taking it when the cold has been eliminated.

The best way to get the zinc you need in through a healthy, well balanced diet.

Research has now left no doubt about the cause of aging, and it is something called oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is caused by an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen and the body’s ability to detoxify and repair the resulting damage that was caused by free radicals. Free radicals, at the cellular level, are the cause of aging and contribute to dozens if not hundreds of known conditions.

Imagine that you can “turn back the clock” to the cellular age of a 20 year old. Well, I have studied the product called Protandim developed and clinically proven with the guidance of prominent Neurologist David Perlmutter MD. I’m convinced that this is a breakthrough. I have added it to my own regimen of nutritional support and am recommending it to my patients. I will keep you posted after my own clinical trial of myself and some of my patients. According to Dr. Perlmutter, it takes 4 months for the FULL benefits to occur.

Protandim is composed of : (1) Bacopa which increases Super Oxide Dismutase (an important anti-oxidant and de-toxifier) production (2) Green Tea which increases metabolism and burns fat (3) Ashwagandha which is an ancient panacea for multiple conditions (4) Tumeric which minimizes the effects of inflammation and (5) Milt Thistle which supports liver health. Now these ingredients can be found in other products but the key is in Protandim’s research on HOW they are put together for the greatest effectiveness.

40 years of research on Protandim lead to features on PBS, ABC, NBC, The Wall Street Journal, and CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s book, ” Chasing Life”. Protandim has been clinically proven to reduce oxidative stress by 40%. If the claim that it will reduce my oxidative stess to the level of a 20 year old in 30 days are true, and I believe they are, then I’ll be practicing chiropractic neurology and enjoying life longer than most of my peers.

Call us today, or speak with me on your next appointment, about Protandim!

(1) Drink 8 full glasses of purified, non fluoridated water per day. Buy a high quality water purifier and shower purifier.

(2) Use a mini-trampoline (rebounder) 10-20 minutes per day depending on your level of fitness. This is the single most powerful way to stimulate every cell in your body with out stress on joints. Benefits are increased brain function/memory, increased muscle tone, increased immune function, and stimulation of the para- sympathetic autonomic nervous system giving benefits to all the major organs of the body.

(3) Do deep breathing exercises (slow and complete inhale through the nose and exhale out through to mouth) while your hands are raised straight above your head. This brings in oxygen and increases metabolic function as well as stimulates right brain function (decreases anxiety) and immune function. It also is a fabulous stress reliever.

(4) Get regular chiropractic adjustments. The greatest input into brain function and consequently overall human health is through proprioception (the sensory stimulation that travels through joints and muscles surrounding the spine and extremities). This is why the benefits of adjustments far transcend mere relief of pain. Benefits include: improved memory, digestion, memory, immune function, respiration, muscle tone, strength, balance and coordination, blood pressure, and sleep quality – just to name a few.

(5) Get a full body massages. Benefits: improves oxygen to cells, lowers blood pressure, reduces stress and anxiety, promotes proper muscle tone

(6) Prevent toxins from building up in your body: (1) Do not eat food produced by a large publicly traded corporation (whenever possible). (2) Don’t smoke (that’s news!) (3) Eat as much organic food grown locally as possible (4) Don’t eat at fast food restaurants (5) avoid MSG and Aspartame (Nutrasweet) (6) avoid artificial sweetners including Splenda (7) avoid saturated fats (hydrogenated fats) (8) Absolutely, positively avoid high fructose corn syrup (HIFS). (9) Use only fluoride free toothpaste (10) Always avoid farm raised fish (11) Don’t eat processed sugar (12) Avoid antiperspirants altogether and use aluminum free deodorants (Toms’ is good)  (13) Eat nothing that says “fat free, carb free, or sugar free” on the label because the chemicals the food industry substitutes for fats, carbs, and sugars are far more dangerous (14) Please, no diet sodas. (15) Get blood work and other testing from you functional medicine doctors (such as myself) to determine deficiencies you may have before you have problems.

Chicago Tribune February 10, 2011

“cortical control areas, broad swaths of gray matter that surround the hypothalamus – respond quite differently to the infusion of fructose than they did to glucose. Across the limited regions of the brain they scanned, glucose significantly raised the level of neural activity for about 20 minutes following the infusion. Fructose had the opposite effect causing activity in the same areas to drop and stay low for about 20 minutes following the infusion.”

Glucose and fructose are both simple sugars but there is a huge difference in how the body processes them.

The Journal of Pharmacology and Therapeutics “Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism”, March 2011 also concludes that functional MRI reveals that the effects of fructose are opposite those of glucose. Not to put to fine a point on it, but fructose base soft drinks cause DECREASED brain function.

In New York, they have recently given public service announcements warning about the dangers of excessive soda consumption. Most experts on this subject agree that the rise of Obesity and Diabetes in this country is in large part due to high fructose corn syrup (HIFS) which is not natural fructose . The number 1 source of calories in America is fructose SODA! And not far behind are condiments, baked foods, and packaged foods. Fructose has a detrimental impact on 2 hormones that impact satiety and hunger (leptin and ghrelin). This is why even so called “diet” drinks really yield  the opposite of what people think they are drinking them for – namely, they increase fat storage as well as food intake. Imagine the irony of overweight people reaching for “diet”  sodas 3 or 4 times per day and thinking that they are losing weight when, in fact, they are doing the opposite. Fructose is metabolized to fat faster than any other sugar promoting adipose fat in the abdominal area.

Here are some of the adverse side effects of high fructose corn syrup:

(1) Liver Disease (2) Obesity (3) Diabetes (4) Cardiovascular Disease (5) High Blood Pressure (6) Elevated Trigycerides (7) Elevated LDL (bad cholesterol) (8) Gout (9) Arthritis (10) Cancer

You can stop using HIFS but it’s difficult when the food industry puts it in EVERYTHING because it’s cheap and makes food taste better. At Brown CNC we give you a diet and lifestyle regimen for stabilizing blood sugar to prevent the diseases listed above.  We are your primary care wellness clinic.

Jack LaLanne (the original fitness guru) recently passed away at age 93 (he looked and acted more like a man in his 50’s). How would you like to go out like a candle at 93 still happy and productive. He once said, “people don’t die of old age, they die of neglect”. I would like to add that genetically we are all going to pass, but how healthy and happy those years are is determined by our discipline. A little known fact is that as a child Jack was a delinquent who aggressively attacked his brother with an ax and set his parents house on fire. Fortunately, he attended a nutritional lecture that changed his life. Trained as a chiropractor, he invented some of the first fitness equipment and championed the benefits of raw fruits and vegetables. Today it is no longer controversial that healthy diet and exercise will keep or make you healthy; yet, amazingly most Americans know this and still choose comfort over discipline in eating and exercising. Sadly, according to the American Diabetes Association, an American’s greatest fear is developing a chronic illness (which they could have prevented!).

Consider these facts:
(1) Exercise alone reduces the risk of about 24 health conditions (including mood disorders, anxiety and depression), stroke, and diabetes.
(2) 75% of you do not get more than 3 servings of vegetables per day (absolutely necessary for peak health).
(3) Exercise increases brain function especially in an area called the hippocampus where short term to long term memory and key connections to the emotional brain lie.
(4) Exercise normalizes insulin and leptin (blood sugar) levels and controls weight.
(5) The domino effects of regular exercise are mind boggling – boosting I.Q, lowering blood pressure, increasing immune function (fewer colds, flu’s, etc.), balancing mood swings, slowing down the aging process, reducing the risk of chronic diseases including cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, helping insomnia, building bone strength, relieving pain, and on and on.

Do you want to be fit like Jack LaLlane at 70 or overweight and depressed like Elizabeth Taylor at 45? At Brown CNC, we are dedicated to the former. We want to be your primary care wellness doctor.
