A big part of my practice is treating learning, sensory/motor processing, and developmental disorders. There are no drug “cures” for these disorders. Research shows that  Autistic children have under developed (smaller than normal) areas of the brain in  the frontal lobe, basal ganglia, and cerebellum. The rise in Autism has been the subject of great controversy. In 1980, there was no doctor trained for treating Autism because it was largely unknown (less than 1 in 100,000 cases). Today the estimates are in the 1 in100 range. Unbelievable right? One argument, put forth by the profit driven drug industry which makes big dollars on vaccination programs, is that it is genetic. Scientifically speaking, gene mutations in populations cannot occur quickly enough to account for the exponential rise in Autism in just 30 years. Clearly there are other factors. On the other side are the anti-vaccination party who think that the mercury in vaccines is (or was) purely responsible for the rise.

In my opinion, the problem is a societal one that includes a number of factors:

(1) the rise of toxic processed foods, water, air, and pharmaceuticals

(2) lack of exercise

(3) Computer and TV babysitting

(4) Absentee parenting

(5) Stress

(6) Obesity

(7) Heavy metals (including vaccine loads)

(1) Autistic problems have solutions

(2) Medications aren’t the answer

(3)  Conditions can be reversed

(4) This is one problem with one solution

(5) This is one case where you don’t accentuate the positive, you accentuate the negative (side of the brain)

(1) Kinesthetic stimulation to the side of decreased brain or cerebellum

(2) Visual stimulation to the side of decreased brain

(3) Auditory stimulation to the side of decreased brain

(4) Olfactory stimulation to the side of decreased brain

(5) Cognitive exercises to the side of decreased brain

(6) Elimination of primitive reflexes

(7) Elimination of offending foods

(8) Elimination of toxins

ADD/ADHD, Autism/Asperger’s, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, Dyslexia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, Oppositional Defiant Disorders, Tourette’s Syndrom, and Non Verbal Learning Disabilities

NINE UNIQUE THINGS ABOUT AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDERS: (1) they are not separate but have the same underlying problem -smaller brain areas (2) deficits in clumsiness will occur in 50-100% of these kids (4) bi-pedalism (standing on two feet) leads to brain asymmetry (5) cognitive and motor dysfunction (6) loss of stimulation from postural muscles leads to loss of temporal processing (7) developmental delays (8) the most common problem is gait and posture (9) loss of stimulation from postural muscles results in loss of spatial connections.

That “spare” tire around your waist that people jokingly talk about is one of the surest signs of declining health through Insulin Resistance which can lead to Diabetes. Called visceral fat, this dangerous thick waist is a sign of impending Type 2 Diabetes and a sign that fat is also building up around your internal organs. This is not news to most people. There is strong evidence today that proteins and hormones released by insulin problems cause inflammation which damages arteries and liver function at the same time it negatively effects the way you break down sugars and fats. What is news to most people is that abnormal insulin and leptin are the twin sisters of Diabetes and Obesity. You see, leptin is a hormone that tells you when to stop eating. If it doesn’t, then you will keep eating without a sense of being full. Some people literally eat themselves to death. Leptin is responsible for signaling insulin to bind with receptor sites and when this goes amiss then you can not only become insulin resistant but obese in the process. The only known ways to stabilize insulin and leptin balance is through diet and exercise. Wow, imagine that. Just take care of yourself by exercising discipline in your life.

MALES: Waist over 40 inches is considered Obesity. Ideal waist measurement is under 36 inches or under.

FEMALES: Waist over 37 inches is considered Obesity.  Ideal waist measurement is 33 inches or under.

**Keys to the kingdom of healthy blood sugar and body fat  are (1) eliminating grains, starches, and potatoes which all turn into sugar (2) eliminating sugars including and especially the dangerous high fructose corn syrups and so called “diet” foods and drinks which actually make you gain weight by increasing your appetite

(1) Get plenty of high quality sleep

(2) Exercise regularly and intensely (but be sure to measure your heart rate and make sure it is within your ability)

(3) Reduce stress

(4) Optimize Vitamin D levels

(5) Eat organic

Kevin Patterson MD, in his article “Diseases of Affluence” states, ” No country in the world has the resources to continue to treat Diabetics the way they are being treated now, if the prevalence rates increase at the rates they are increasing.” The CDC estimates that by 2050 1 in 3 American Adults will be Type 2 Diabetics and presently 1 in 4 is either Diabetic or pre-Diabetic.

The good news is that Americans are TRYING to eat better. The bad news is that they think they are (eating better) when they are not. And it’s no wonder with the flood of advertising and mis-information promoting bad foods and the abhorrent government subsidization of  the “junk food” industries leaving people the choice of paying more for healthy food than junk food.

MISTAKE #1: According to Consumer Reports, more than half of Americans say they are “limiting fat” without knowing the difference between good and bad fats. For example, trans fats and refined, polyunsaturated fats are the bad ones. Saturated fats (fish, dairy meat, tropical plants, coconut, etc.) are GOOD. Saturated fats are anti-viral, anti-plaque, heart friendly necessities. Most Americans would benefit from ORGANIC beef and dairy products and non-farm raised fish such as wild salmon, which provide anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids.

MISTAKE #2: The general public assumes (incorrectly) that refined carbohydrates such as sugar is bad and that grains and fruits are good. The truth is that, grains, fruits,  and refined sugars should be limited in quantity because they all turn to sugar in the body and put stress on the insulin regulating systems in the body. This can cause or exacerbate health conditions as varied as Obesity, Diabetes, Hypertension, and Cancer. And guess what? About 80% of the American population has one of these conditions. When you add in gluten intolerance (in America almost all grain products have unhealthy gluten) to the list of disadvantages of grains, the problems are magnified. About 20% of the population may require a high carbohydrate diet to lose weight, but even those should eliminate grains.

(1) Do eat protein (organic eggs, fish, etc.) for breakfast and drop the sugar foods (fruits, donuts, etc.). A high quality protein and vitamin shake such as Clearvite from Apex Energetics (my choice) can even replace breakfast for those who skip or eat poor breakfasts.

(2) Do eat HEALTHY CARBOHYDRATES in the form of heaping helpings of leafy green and all other colored vegetables as often as possible. This will not put stress on your insulin system.

(3) Cut out processed sugar and gluten products as much as possible

The challenge today is that it is cheap and effortless to eat poorly and it is expensive and labor intensive to have a healthy diet. At Brown Chiropractic Neurology, we specialize in well care where our motto is “healthy by choice, not by chance” and the truth is that today there is no chance to stay healthy without good choices, and that includes diet and lifestyle.

Chicago Tribune February 10, 2011

“cortical control areas, broad swaths of gray matter that surround the hypothalamus – respond quite differently to the infusion of fructose than they did to glucose. Across the limited regions of the brain they scanned, glucose significantly raised the level of neural activity for about 20 minutes following the infusion. Fructose had the opposite effect causing activity in the same areas to drop and stay low for about 20 minutes following the infusion.”

Glucose and fructose are both simple sugars but there is a huge difference in how the body processes them.

The Journal of Pharmacology and Therapeutics “Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism”, March 2011 also concludes that functional MRI reveals that the effects of fructose are opposite those of glucose. Not to put to fine a point on it, but fructose base soft drinks cause DECREASED brain function.

In New York, they have recently given public service announcements warning about the dangers of excessive soda consumption. Most experts on this subject agree that the rise of Obesity and Diabetes in this country is in large part due to high fructose corn syrup (HIFS) which is not natural fructose . The number 1 source of calories in America is fructose SODA! And not far behind are condiments, baked foods, and packaged foods. Fructose has a detrimental impact on 2 hormones that impact satiety and hunger (leptin and ghrelin). This is why even so called “diet” drinks really yield  the opposite of what people think they are drinking them for – namely, they increase fat storage as well as food intake. Imagine the irony of overweight people reaching for “diet”  sodas 3 or 4 times per day and thinking that they are losing weight when, in fact, they are doing the opposite. Fructose is metabolized to fat faster than any other sugar promoting adipose fat in the abdominal area.

Here are some of the adverse side effects of high fructose corn syrup:

(1) Liver Disease (2) Obesity (3) Diabetes (4) Cardiovascular Disease (5) High Blood Pressure (6) Elevated Trigycerides (7) Elevated LDL (bad cholesterol) (8) Gout (9) Arthritis (10) Cancer

You can stop using HIFS but it’s difficult when the food industry puts it in EVERYTHING because it’s cheap and makes food taste better. At Brown CNC we give you a diet and lifestyle regimen for stabilizing blood sugar to prevent the diseases listed above.  We are your primary care wellness clinic.

There are crucial relationships between the thyroid gland and the reproductive/endocrine systems in males and females.

In females, thyroid imbalances  lead to  pituitary-gonadal dysfunctions which include alterations in FSH and LH hormone coordination and release, ovarian FSH receptor site sensitivity, and peripheral progesterone receptor sensitivity. These imbalances lead to miscarriages, ovarian cysts, infertility,  migraines, weight gain, mood disorders, depression, and abnormal menstrual cycles. Sometimes the endocrine symptoms are so pronounced that the thyroid culprit is overlooked. Conversely, the use of synthetic hormones such as birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy (HRT), in addition to insulin surges and stress responses, lead to abnormal spikes of hormones such as estrogen, cortisol, and testosterone, which disrupts health thyroid function.

In males, thyroid imbalances can lead to pronounced  male hormone imbalances which include decreased testosterone, altered pituitary-gonadalfunction, obesity, exhaustion, cognitive decline, erectile dysfunction, and depression.  This clinical presentation will largely be ignored because the male hormone imbalances will obscure the thyroid culprit. Many men start taking synthetic testosterone which further disrupts thyroid metabolism.

At Brown Chiropractic  Neurology, we look for the root cause of ANY metabolic disorder. As you can see, sometimes the problems are not where the symptoms present.

Andropause is the scientific term for male menopause. Men don’t menstruate and they don’t have a sudden decline in hormone function, like women, but instead go through a gradual decline in androgen dominance (testosterone). The level of androgen production accounts for the fact that some men age with great vim, vigor and virility and others do not.  The key point here is that men face a gradual decline whereas women experience a sudden drop in hormonal dominance. Andropause is insidious and often overlooked because men aren’t screened by health professionals. In addition men don’t recognize or ignore the signs – translation: men don’t won’t to be bothered or admit that they are not the stud of yesteryear. As a result, Andropause is now a serious health problem in America. Causes may include: accumulated environmental toxins (exotoxins and xenoestrogens), increased emotional stress, increased dietary stress ( lack of essential fatty acids – Omega 3’s), and increased demands on liver detoxification. Andropause is the direct result of the environmental, chemical, physical, and dietary demands of modern industrialized life.

There are numerous causes of low testosterone including: (1) functional Andropause (the most common form where the ratio between testosterone and estrogen shift) (2) genetic disorders (3) primary Andropause (4) secondary Andropause. A normal blood testosterone to estrogen ratio is 50:1 while many men with Andropause have an 8 or 10:1 ratio.  A critical point here is that these men may have “normal” testosterone blood ranges but estrogen dominance exists and creates a low testosterone state. Low testosterone levels result in obesity, insulin sensitivity (blood sugar problems), increased cardiovascular risk, and cholesterol problems.

SYMPTOMS of Andropause: (1) decrease in stamina (2) depression (3) decrease libido (4) mental fatigue (5) lack of drive (6) decrease in morning erections (7) decreased ability to start or maintain full erections (8) muscle soreness. SIGNS of Andropause: (1) increased blood pressure (2) increased cholesterol and or triglycerides in blood analysis (3) increased fat around breast and hips (4) hemorrhoids and varicose veins (5) fat tire around waist  (6) increased fasting blood glucose (insulin resistance)

Andropause occurs most often in middle aged men but can hit men in their 20’s or 30’s.  The most common clinical presentation is a 40-50 yo man who GRADUALLY loses his strength, energy, enthusiasm, and sex drive. He is tired and loses interest at home and in business. His is a downward spiral resulting in a disaster of a sex life with  inability to achieve erections.

THERE IS HOPE! Call our office and schedule an examination. We utilize the latest scientific approaches based on peer reviewed, indexed literature to provide drug free solutions for Andropause and other metabolic conditions including but not limited to: thyroid, blood sugar, adrenal, and autoimmune disease. The standard American diet (SAD) is truly sad and not just for adults but especially for children with learning disabilities, or what we call Functional Disconnection Syndrome (FDS). In my 20 years in functional neurology, I have observed that FDS/Autism/Asperger’s children have a preference for the foods that aggravate the condition. They tend to stay away from vegetables, many fruits, lean meats and go for the macaroni and cheese, pizza, milk, cereal, pasta, etc. Not only does this type of diet worsen FDS, but is a prescription for diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and a generally unhealthy brain.
The brain needs 3 things to survive: fuel, oxygen, and activation. In chiropractic neurology, we address all 3 of these requirements. Without proper fuel (good food and supplements) any brain will lose function. In my experience, when working with brain asymmetry (hemisphericity), it is futile to try to balance the brain without proper fuel. Conversely, if the nutrients are proper but the oxygen and activation (brain balancing exercises) are not in line, the results will be less than optimal. I am one of less than 1,000 Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologists worldwide. If you have a learning disabled child, see my website – browncnc.com – and come in for screening. I’d like to help!
