Thyroid hormones and bone metabolism are intimately connected. Most people still think that bone density and strength are determined by calcium levels and that calcium supplementation and calcium rich foods are the answer. Wrong. Bone metabolism has more to do with vitamin D levels, autoimmunity, and thyroid function. There are two things to understand: the impact of thyroid states on bone DENSITY and the impacts of thyroid HORMONES on bone QUALITY. New research reveals that denser bone does not equate to stronger bone. Bone strength or resistance to fracture is not easily measured by bone densitometry which is what the typical medical doctor uses to “assess” bone strength.  Bone density and bone strength are not same thing. In traditional medicine, doctors are taught that bone density is the measure of bone strength and the response to pharmaceutical osteoporosis treatment. In recent years this concept has changed to include a number of characteristics that make up bone quality. BONE QUALITY  is a composite of properties that make the bone resist fractures which includes bone structure, bone damage, collagen quality, mineral crystal size, and bone turnover. So denser bone is not always stronger bone, younger bone density is stronger than older bone density, and changes in density account for only part of the risk factors.

Lack of thyroid hormones will alter normal growth during childhood. Hyperthyroidism is associated with an increased risk of for fractures. Adult hypothyroid patients exhibit higher than normal bone density (not strength) so hypothyroidism is associated with increased risk fractures before and after diagnosis. Those with suppressed levels of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) will lose bone and have higher fracture rates. Those with nomal TSH levels will have no increase in fracture risk.

At Brown Chiropractic Neurology, we perform blood, saliva, stool, analysis to determine where the cause of an individuals problems are. Only by looking at a complete functional analysis can we determine the proper course of treatment. Simply increasing bone density by use of pharmaceuticals will not decrease risk of fracture and falls (#1 cause of death over 65).

There are crucial relationships between the thyroid gland and the reproductive/endocrine systems in males and females.

In females, thyroid imbalances  lead to  pituitary-gonadal dysfunctions which include alterations in FSH and LH hormone coordination and release, ovarian FSH receptor site sensitivity, and peripheral progesterone receptor sensitivity. These imbalances lead to miscarriages, ovarian cysts, infertility,  migraines, weight gain, mood disorders, depression, and abnormal menstrual cycles. Sometimes the endocrine symptoms are so pronounced that the thyroid culprit is overlooked. Conversely, the use of synthetic hormones such as birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy (HRT), in addition to insulin surges and stress responses, lead to abnormal spikes of hormones such as estrogen, cortisol, and testosterone, which disrupts health thyroid function.

In males, thyroid imbalances can lead to pronounced  male hormone imbalances which include decreased testosterone, altered pituitary-gonadalfunction, obesity, exhaustion, cognitive decline, erectile dysfunction, and depression.  This clinical presentation will largely be ignored because the male hormone imbalances will obscure the thyroid culprit. Many men start taking synthetic testosterone which further disrupts thyroid metabolism.

At Brown Chiropractic  Neurology, we look for the root cause of ANY metabolic disorder. As you can see, sometimes the problems are not where the symptoms present.

Science clearly indicates that there is functional communication or crosstalk between the brain and the thyroid gland. Like the immune system, the brain is powerfully influenced by the thyroid. Thyroid hormones have consequential effects on the microglia cells which are the brain’s first defense against an attack (inflammation). Thyroid hormones also significantly influence neurotransmitter pathways. Neurotransmitters are chemicals which relay, modulate, and amplify signals between a neuron and another cell. This makes sense since thyroid sufferers develop a huge array of mood, neurological, and cognitive disorders. Neurotransmitters are important for coordinating the feed back loop between the hypothalamus (which maintains homeostasis through the autonomic nervous system), pituitary (which is the master gland of the endocrine system), and thyroid (which takes iodine and converts it into thyroid hormones). This is called the HPT axis.

There are interactions between neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, GABA, and acetylcholine), microglia, and the thyroid. Thyroid hormone support neurogenesis, synaptogenesis, dendritic growth, axonal growth, neuronal migration, and precursor cell proliferation. This results in greater plasticity (brain shaping and forming), greater brain function, and lessening of neuro-degeneration.

At Brown Chiropractic Neurology, blood, saliva, stool and/or other necessary analysis is done that includes thyroid antibody (proteins against foreign invaders) testing. This is not done in traditional medicine circles. Why not? Because the treatment (steroids) for autoimmune disease causes side effects that are worse that the disease. So in allopathic medicine, there is not a treatment for the immune problem and the thyroid is treated as a common hypo – or hyper-thyroid condition. While thyroid hormones may be necessary, the treatment alone will not address the autoimmunity and the condition will continue to worsen. If you suffer from autoimmune conditions, we’d like to help.

The indexed scientific research now clearly indicates a functional CROSSTALK between the thyroid and the immune system. Thyroid hormones exhibit influences on cellular messenger systems and promote regulation of T- and B- cell activity. T- cells are white blood cells that tailor the body’s immune response to specific pathogens (disease). B- cells promote antibodies (proteins) necessary to fight off infections.  Thyroid hormones also influence cellular apoptosis (pruning of unwanted cells) and cytokine (small proteins affecting interactions between cells) release. In all our cases of thyroid malfunction, we consider immune deregulation and challenges.

Immune signaling mediators (cytokines, and adjuvants) have been found to disrupt ALL aspects of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis which regulates hormones and thermoregulatory systems. These mediators also affect thyroid receptor site activity, transcriptional expressions, and peripheral metabolism. So immune disorders have a great potential to disrupt thyroid physiology (Hashimoto’s Disease, Graves Disease).

At Brown Chiropractic Neurology, lab work is performed that includes thyroid antibody (proteins against foreign invaders) testing. This is not done in traditional medicine circles. Why not? Because the treatment (steroids) for autoimmune disease causes side effects that are worse than the autoimmune disease. So in traditional medicine there is NO TREATMENT for the immune problem and the thyroid is treated as  just a common hypo- or hyper-thyroid. While thyroid hormones may be necessary, the treatment alone will not address their autoimmunity and the condition typically worsens. If you suffer from autoimmune conditions, we’d like to help.

Interactive Metronome (IM) has been widely recognized for improving motor skills and now research is finding unexpected benefits to IM treatment. Clinicians working with cognitive, behavioral, social, communicative, and academic functions are finding substantial improvements in these areas:
(1) Attention and concentration
(2) Cognitive speed
(3)Executive function
(4) Auditory processing
(5) Language processing
(6) Motor control and co-ordination
(7) Memory problems
(8) Self control (aggression/impulsivity)
(9) Reading & math fluency
(10) Phonological awareness
(11) Speech apraxia
(12) Tourette’s Syndrome, tics,
(13) Stuttering
(14) Sensory processing

What is IM?
IM is a brain based assessment and treatment tool that has been shown to improve neurological functions of motor planning and sequencing (core functions of the brain). Reaching, grasping, aiming, speaking, walking, and listening all utilize motor planning and sequencing. Before IM, objective measurements were lacking and there were two important questions that were unanswered:
(1) What tool can precisely and objectively measure and document the degree of impairment to motor planning and sequencing?
(2) What is the most objective and efficient way to restore these core brain functions?

IM is the answer to both these questions. Clinicians can objectively measure motor planning and sequencing and assign a level of impairment in milliseconds. As the student improves, her ability to motor plan and sequence is reflected in improving millisecond averages.

What age group is IM appropriate for? Age 6 and above have been traditionally qualified; however, today chiropractic neurologists have been using IM with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers in certain cases. Expected improvements in the areas of sensory processing, motor planning, language, and communication are measured and documented. Some students progress at a faster rate than others.

How does IM improve function? Timing and rhythm

IM has been shown to improve function and recovery of patients with:
ADHD
Apraxia
Auditory Processing Disorder
Autistic Spectrum Disorders
Brain Tumors
Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral Vascular Accident
Developmental Delays/Learning Disabilities
Dyslexia and other Reading Disorders
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
Limb Amputation/Prosthetics
Multiple Sclerosis
Non Verbal Learning Disorder
Parkinson’s Disease
Phonological Processing Disorder
Traumatic Brain Injury
Sensory Processing Disorder

Call us today to have a complimentary consultation with the doctor and see if IM can help you or your loved ones.

Hi, I’m Scott Brown DC, DABCN, FACFN, Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist and wellness doctor. There are less than 1000 doctors world wide who have obtained this recognition.I specialize in optimizing function of what I consider the 3 most important components of health: brain (neurology), spine (nerve function), and metabolic function (thyroid, liver, blood sugar/insulin, adrenals, etc.).

My neurology practice consists of rehabilitating Vertigo, Balance, Movement, Cognitive/Memory, Mood, Learning, Sleep, Developmental, Autistic Spectrum, Spinal Cord, Fibromyalgia and Brain Trauma disorders – to name a few.

My spinal practice consists of rehabilitation of Musculo-skeletal, Neck, Back, Hip, Headache, Migraine, Extremity, Carpal Tunnel, Tennis Elbow, Rotator Cuff, Sciatica, and Thoracic Outlet disorders – to name a few.

My metabolic practice emphasizes support and prevention of blood sugar (Hypoglycemia, Insulin Resistance, and Diabetes), Thyroid (Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism), Adrenal (Hyperadrenalism, Hypoadrenalism), Hormonal (male and female), Gastrointestinal, Kidney, Liver/Gall Bladder, Anemic, and AUTOIMMUNE  Disorders – to name a few.

We utilize cutting edge diagnostics and treatments with non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical brain based therapeutics. The procedures of chiropractic neurology are based on the intimate connection between the central nervous system and the musculoskeletal system mediated by sense receptors in muscles, eyes, ears, and nose. Modalities used include but are not limited to: proprioceptive (touch) stimulation, spinal adjustments, visual (eye exercises and light) stimulation, auditory (music and Interactive Metronome), olfactory (smell) stimulation, and cognitive  therapies. Physical therapies include: cold laser, hydrotherapy, EMS, oxygen therapy, and vibration.

The high impact field of chiropractic neurology was the subject of the PBS special AMAZING HEALERS called ” Waking Up The Brain”  The CD is available through our office.

As modernized populations began to veer away from natural foods toward a more “civilized diet”, health has declined. This does not just apply to Americans but to any ethnic or genetic group. Eskimos lived healthily on a diet consisting mostly of fats and meats with almost no vegetables, fruits, or carbohydrates. Their population was virtually free of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc. Once we brought new foods not found in the arctic environment, the Eskimos began to suffer from the same diseases that we do. Other populations from tropical regions where fruits and vegetables are heavily consumed, also thrived virtually disease free, even though their diets were completely different from the Eskimos. What gives? Very simple. Those who survived the arctic environment developed a need for foods specific to that environment. Those who survived a tropical environment thrived on foods specific to that environment. Since America is melting pot of peoples from all over the globe, it is not as easy to tailor fit even a healthy diet for children produced of parents from different regions of the world. The bottom line is that even if people live in an environment that was natural for their genetic food needs, the foods produced now are mostly processed and packaged and sometimes completely devoid of nutritional value if not downright dangerous to our health.

HOW TO SURVIVE A DISEASED NUTRITIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM – The 10 commandments
(1) Eat at least 1/3 of your food raw
(2) Avoid processed foods and artificial ANYTHING (food coloring, flavors, and especially sweeteners)
(3) Enjoy fermented foods (including kefir and cultured vegetables)
(4) Eat foods loaded with healthy oils and fats (increase Omega 3’s and reduce Omega 6’s). Also supplement with pharmaceutical grade fish oils that include DHA and EPA. Take probiotics to keep healthy bacteria in your gut.
(5) Exercise regularly and raise your heart rate to the maximum safe levels. (Google Peak Performance Exercise for some examples)
(6) Drink the purest (and tested) water you can find
(7) Reduce stress (easier said than done)
(8) Sleep well (if you can’t, see me – I can help!)
(9) Make sure you check your vitamin D levels every year at least. Most Americans need 35 IU’s per pound of body weight per day. So a 200 lb man should take 7500 IU’s per day. The RDA is pitifully inadequate even though it has just been increased from 400 to 800 IU’s per day.
(10) Detoxify your body. Supplement with Glutathione and Superoxide Dismutase

It is easy to understand how young people are duped into believing that processed and junk foods are regular food. After all there is a huge pay-off for the large corporations promoting it every day. If we don’t educate our kids and ourselves, it will get to the point that food is nothing more than a chemical mix with a “kick”. Comfort foods?

Researchers are now discovering that genetic mutations and new diseases are the direct result of processed foods. Many of us believe that a large majority of diseases today can be traced back to the foods we eat (example: obese women are 60% more likely to develop cancer and give birth to deformed babies). How often do we hear health officials talk about the need for more raw, natural, and organic foods to combat cancer? Rarely.

Following these 10 food commandments can help you avoid diseases premature aging regardless or race, creed, or color.

Well by choice, not by chance is our tag line. If you have the discipline, we have the way.
