Brain degeneration and sleep

There has been an explosion in research on brain function; and, it is largely due to this rising number of Dementia and Alzheimer’s victims. New discoveries about the powerful effects of nutrients, amino acids, bio-flavinoids, and herbs are being published frequently. We now understand how bad guts, diets, adrenals, and blood sugar lead to inflammation and degeneration of the brain.  Improving our diet and exercise and decreasing stress, coupled with supplementing with specific nutrients, can put the brakes on brain inflammation and degeneration. By supporting the thyroid, we also support the brain. An unsupported thyroid almost guarantees some form of brain degeneration.

When the brain degenerates, the common symptoms include fatigue, brain fog, depression, and insomnia. Insomnia is associated with so many bodily breakdowns because almost all diseases lead to adrenal stress. Some insomniacs will never respond to sleep medications or natural remedies. The reason is that the root cause is not being addressed. Only by looking at a comprehensive history and examination which may include blood, saliva, and stool analysis can the right course of treatment begin.

If you have wondered if chiropractic neurology and functional medicine can help you, see a chiropractor. Better yet, see a chiropractic neurologist such as myself, Dr. Scott Brown.

Some insomniacs KNOW that they have trouble sleeping. Others don’t. For instance, many of you wake up tired even after 8 or more hours of sleep. Some of you are refreshed and rested after as little as 5 to 6 hours of sleep. There are many possible reasons for the former. Among them is that the sleep you are getting is fragmented and the normal sleep cycles are not occurring. For instance, you may be in rapid eye movement (REM) or dream sleep all night with no deep sleep.

Another reason that may keep you from waking up rested is Sleep Apnea or Sleep Hypopnea. In Sleep Apnea, one will actually stop breathing. In Sleep Hypopnea, one will have lower levels of Oxygen saturation at night but not actually stop breathing. Either way, without oxygen it is hard to rejuvenate at night without proper oxygen.

Research indicates that as we age, the HPA axis of the brain is altered by high cortisol levels. Cortisol (a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland) has an impact on both REM and deep sleep patterns. Stressful American lifestyles are the major contributor to adrenal dysfunction and sleep disorders.

Adrenal Hypo-function – people who can’t stay asleep

People who skip meals or eat low protein/high carbohydrate breakfasts, eat & drink sugar laden foods and beverages, and live at the coffee shop drinking caffeine and latte drinks are the perfect candidate to become hypoglycemic. They become shaky, irritable, head-achy, and light headed if they miss meals. This puts tremendous stress on the adrenal glands to keep blood sugar stable (especially during sleep). When the body is asleep, it requires a continuous supply of glucose, which is depleted 60% during an overnight fast. People with blood sugar problems will not be able to tolerate an overnight fast creating a stress response on the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands must now secrete adrenaline to compensate for the lack of cortisol and the low blood sugar. This causes the person to wake up in the middle of the night. The body can’t rest when it is being pumped full of adrenaline. In other words, you can’t run from the tiger and sleep at the same time.

What do top athletes do that separate them from the herd? Other than natural ability combined with hard work? They are always searching for the “edge” for ways to improve – even fractions of a second for Lindsey Vonn in the downhill ski race can mean the difference between a gold medal and obscurity. ALL of these top performers today are diet fanatics and Lance Armstrong is even reported to weigh his food.

Dr. Brown’s fine peak performance tips:
(1) Optimize energy systems by supporting a healthy brain and intestinal flora. Probiotics and omega 3 fatty acids promote symbiosis between brain and gut.  Why do I associate brain and gut? Because most people with good brains have good guts. The gut is considered the 2nd brain and is responsible for 75% of your immune system. Immune compromised athletes rarely excel, not to mention that a leaky gut fails to deliver fuel to make the muscles work.

(2) Get as much fiber in your diet as possible. Regularity promotes optimal performance. Try beans, peas, legumes, apricots, raspberries, figs, plums, pears, apples, broccoli, cherries, bananas, brussels sprouts, coconuts, and baked potatoes (with skin).

(3) Get 8 hours of sleep EVERY night. Some studies (and my personal experience) show that the hours slept before midnight are worth twice as much as after.

(4) Turn on your brain and central nervous system with chiropractic adjustments and massage. Top performers such as Joe Montana, Tiger Woods, and Lance Armstrong keep their edge with regular adjustments and freely admit that they could not perform at the highest level without spinal and extremity adjustments.

(5) Limit alcohol. No explanation needed

(6) Thank you for not smoking!

(7) Eliminate stress. Chill out – literally. Read spiritual or inspirational literature before going to sleep and NEVER watch the (bad) news that starts at 11 pm every night.

Many of you may have heard of Jim Fixx who basically began the “runners high” revolution in the 70’s. Jim was slim and trim and ran 8-20 miles a day. He died suddenly of a heart attack at, I believe, age 52. Just a few years ago Alberto Salazar, another world class runner nearly died of a heart attack at age 49. Researchers have studied older men who are -or were- olympians, runners, rowers, and other high output athletes. The disturbing results are that HALF of these guys have scarring of the heart. Those affected were those who had gone through the longest and hardest training (like those who ran over 100 marathons). Studies on rats showed similar results. Unfortunately, there are no guidelines for who is most at risk or how much is too much exercise.
What does this mean for you? Probably nothing since most of you are not over-training. You should exercise daily 20-30 minutes even if is just walking or jumping on a re-bounder. You will feel better, sleep better, lose weight, and avoid insulin resistance (pre-diabetes). Also the key to beating depression is through the legs, so when you get the blues – exercise, because it produces serotonin which is the feel good neurotransmitter.

Don’t forget that regular chiropractic adjustments help boost immune systems, prevents injuries, balance neurotransmitters resulting in mood stabilization.

Be well by choice, not by chance!

Sleep, sweet sleep. As those who know me can attest, this is my favorite topic. Studies have been conducted showing photos of sleep study participants to members of the opposite sex. The study compared people after 8 hours of perfect sleep to those having missed a whole nights  sleep. The subjects were told not to use any makeup or hair care for the photos. Those rating attractiveness and youth rated the sleeping subjects an average of at least 1 point higher (scale of 10) on the scales of youthfulness and attractiveness. The average was close to 2 points higher. For the vain among you, this should be enough. For those who are truly interested the the health effects that lead to a more attractive and youthful appearance, consider the following:

(1) Heart Disease and Diabetes – too much or too little sleep have been significantly linked to Heart Disease and Type 2 Diabetes.

(2) Cancer – disruption in sleep cycles have caused hormonal changes that effect melatonin release and has been related to tumor growth

(3) Weight – disruption of sleep cycles lead to dys-regulation of appetite and satiation hormones leading to weight gain.

(4) Immune Resistance – Proper sleep boosts the immune system and decreases your chances of viral infections.

(5) Memory and Learning – Proper sleep help regulate neurotansmitters leading to better short term memory and creativity.

Chronic Conditions that are aggravated by lack of sleep include: Depression, Anxiety, GI problems, Headaches, Memory Loss, Learning and Behavioral Problems, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Kidney Disease, and Hypertension.

PRICELESS SLEEP TIPS: (1) Make sure your bedroom is completely dark (2) Go to bed between 9pm and 11 pm every night. Tinker with the time until the right time for you is obvious (for me it is 9:30 -10:00pm) (3) Don’t watch TV or use computers for the last hour before bedtime and instead read inspirational literature (4) Pee before you sleep to decrease the possibility of waking up in the night (5) Use full spectrum light bulbs at the office or during the day to maximize light stimulation (6) Use low spectrum (blue) light bulbs at night or in the bedroom to promote sleepiness (7) DON’T work alternating shifts or NIGHT shifts as this is probably the worst thing in the world for normal circadian sleep.
