For those who can’t fall asleep…
People with high stress lives run the risk of over active adrenals or adrenal hyper-function. Since this describes the lives of most Americans, most readers at some point during their life, have periods where they can’t fall asleep. When one has ANY kind of stress whether it is mental, emotional, chemical, toxic, food sensitivities, or organ disease and malfunction the body will need extra cortisol to pay for the increased metabolic needs caused by the stress; often, many of these factors exist simultaneously. Typically, they have higher than optimal cortisol levels when bedtime arrives, due to the excitatory relationship between cortisol and the central nervous system. High cortisol levels at bedtime are a prescription for insomnia. The reason for high cortisol levels is simply because the body is being put in a stress response state which fires up the adrenals to compensate. This over compensation means that you don’t sleep. Pretty simple… Or so it seems. Since cortisol stabilizes blood sugar during the day, it is normally released between meals to balance blood sugar. When blood sugar or glucose levels drop, the Hypothalamus/Pituitary/Adrenal Axis (HPA) causes the release of cortisol to maintain glucose levels. Normally, cortisol levels should be high in the morning and low at night, dropping gradually throughout the day. In abnormal circadian cycles, the cortisol levels usually stay high all day to balance blood sugar levels.

If high stress and high cortisol levels exist long enough, the individual may progress from Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) to Insulin Resistance and later to Diabetes. During this progression, they may suffer from the symptoms of high blood sugar, where the body becomes flooded with insulin. In this phase, people begin to crash after a meal feeling sleepy and fatigued, especially when eating a high carbohydrate meal. They also have intense cravings for sweets after meals.

Cortisol ( a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland) is crucial to thyroid function. Cortisol raises blood sugar (glucose) levels when they go too low. Over time, if the blood sugar goes too low it exhausts the adrenals leading to the corruption of thyroid activities. This dip in blood sugar also results in exhaustion of the Hypothalamus/Pituitary/Adrenal (HPA) axis. This HPA axis is controlled by the primitive brain function in the area of survival. Stress in all its many forms (diet, lifestyle, exposure to toxins, etc.) is greater today in America than at any time in history. Stress leads to adrenal failure and adrenal failure leads to thyroid malfunction including functional hypothyroidism (under active thyroid). Over time the loss of both adrenal and thyroid function leads to gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction including infection, inflammation, and dysbiosis. This in turns weakens the thyroid and the adrenals.  You can see that this domino effect can lead to a host of  symptoms that make detective work difficult. So many people with blood sugar and adrenal failure are not being appropriately treated

HYPOGLYCEMIA occurs when fasting blood glucose levels indicate low fasting serum (blood) glucose. Hypoglycemia is caused by poor diet (heavy carbohydrates, sugars, and skipped meals), low cortisol levels, low adrenal function, Hypothyroidism, and drug side effects. Symptoms include headaches, fatigue, shakiness, irritability if meals are missed, and sweet cravings.

SYNDROME X or Metabolic Syndrome occurs when fasting glucose levels are high (this is a pre-Diabetic condition. In Syndrome X, there is usually an accompanying decrease in good cholesterol (High Density Lipoprotein, HDL), elevation in bad cholesterol (Low Density Lipoprotein, LDL), elevation in triglycerides, and elevation in uric acid.  This is usually the result of a couch potato lifestyle combined with bad food choices. Symptoms include fatigue after meals and cravings for sweets.

Maintaining blood sugar balance (neither too high or too low) is necessary to be healthy and without it, not only does one have a risk of Diabetes but also breakdown of adrenal, thyroid, gut, liver, and immune systems.

Stay away from all sodas, especially diets sodas, due to adverse health effects including but not limited to: GI problems, blood sugar problems, weight gain, dizziness, blurred vision, and migraines. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) now predicts that of those born in America after the year 2000: 1 in 3 Caucasians, 1 in 2 Hispanics, and 1 in 2 African Americans will become full blown Diabetics. This condition alone is predicted to break the health care system. Sodas are one of the major contributors to this alarming rise in Diabetes.

Turn off all electronic media including computers and TV for at least an hour before bedtime. Go to bed at the same time every night and preferably before 11:00 pm (some research shows that the hours before midnight are worth twice as much sleep as those after midnight). Some people have trouble going to sleep and some people have trouble staying asleep. These problems usually are related to two things: blood sugar (insulin) function and adrenal health. We specialize in solutions for metabolic, immunological, and neurological health. Sleep is so important for EVERY one of these systems.

Is high cholesterol something to worry about? Well if you listen to the PR machine of the makers of statin drugs (think Lipitor), almost the entire population should be on statin drugs. But wait a minute. Let’s discuss what cholesterol is and why we need it and couldn’t live without it.
Cholesterol is a natural, life sustaining steroid hormone found in animal fats and oils. It is found in nerve fibers, blood, brain, and liver. It is necessary for production of sex hormones, adrenal steroids, cell development and bile acid production. Why does every body hate it? Answer: because it makes gobs of $ for it’s makers. The healthy range for MOST people is 150-200. More important though than the Total Cholesterol reading is the ratio of cholesterol to the other lipid markers (Triglycerides, High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL). Anyone who has a TOTAL CHOLESTEROL reading of 201 is considered a candidate for statin drugs. But is this a problem? Not if the HDL (good cholesterol) is between 55-80, the bad cholesterol (LDL) is below 120, and the Triglycerides are 100.

If you have wondered if chiropractic can help, see your chiropractor or chiropractors, see a chiropractic neurologist, or do both and see me, Dr. Scott Brown.

At Brown Chiropractic Neurology, we specialize in normalizing lipid markers by making sure that blood sugar, thyroid, adrenal, GI, liver, and immune function are healthy. That “spare” tire around your waist that people jokingly talk about is one of the surest signs of declining health through Insulin Resistance which can lead to Diabetes. Called visceral fat, this dangerous thick waist is a sign of impending Type 2 Diabetes and a sign that fat is also building up around your internal organs. This is not news to most people. There is strong evidence today that proteins and hormones released by insulin problems cause inflammation which damages arteries and liver function at the same time it negatively effects the way you break down sugars and fats. What is news to most people is that abnormal insulin and leptin are the twin sisters of Diabetes and Obesity. You see, leptin is a hormone that tells you when to stop eating. If it doesn’t, then you will keep eating without a sense of being full. Some people literally eat themselves to death. Leptin is responsible for signaling insulin to bind with receptor sites and when this goes amiss then you can not only become insulin resistant but obese in the process. The only known ways to stabilize insulin and leptin balance is through diet and exercise. Wow, imagine that. Just take care of yourself by exercising discipline in your life.

ARE YOU AT RISK?

MALES: Waist over 40 inches is considered Obesity. Ideal waist measurement is under 36 inches or under.

FEMALES: Waist over 37 inches is considered Obesity.  Ideal waist measurement is 33 inches or under.

**Keys to the kingdom of healthy blood sugar and body fat  are (1) eliminating grains, starches, and potatoes which all turn into sugar (2) eliminating sugars including and especially the dangerous high fructose corn syrups and so called “diet” foods and drinks which actually make you gain weight by increasing your appetite

JETTISON YOUR INNER FAT:

(1) Get plenty of high quality sleep

(2) Exercise regularly and intensely (but be sure to measure your heart rate and make sure it is within your ability)

(3) Reduce stress

(4) Optimize Vitamin D levels

(5) Eat organic

Kevin Patterson MD, in his article “Diseases of Affluence” states, ” No country in the world has the resources to continue to treat Diabetics the way they are being treated now, if the prevalence rates increase at the rates they are increasing.” The CDC estimates that by 2050 1 in 3 American Adults will be Type 2 Diabetics and presently 1 in 4 is either Diabetic or pre-Diabetic.
