The good news is that Americans are TRYING to eat better. The bad news is that they think they are (eating better) when they are not. And it’s no wonder with the flood of advertising and mis-information promoting bad foods and the abhorrent government subsidization of  the “junk food” industries leaving people the choice of paying more for healthy food than junk food.

MISTAKE #1: According to Consumer Reports, more than half of Americans say they are “limiting fat” without knowing the difference between good and bad fats. For example, trans fats and refined, polyunsaturated fats are the bad ones. Saturated fats (fish, dairy meat, tropical plants, coconut, etc.) are GOOD. Saturated fats are anti-viral, anti-plaque, heart friendly necessities. Most Americans would benefit from ORGANIC beef and dairy products and non-farm raised fish such as wild salmon, which provide anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids.

MISTAKE #2: The general public assumes (incorrectly) that refined carbohydrates such as sugar is bad and that grains and fruits are good. The truth is that, grains, fruits,  and refined sugars should be limited in quantity because they all turn to sugar in the body and put stress on the insulin regulating systems in the body. This can cause or exacerbate health conditions as varied as Obesity, Diabetes, Hypertension, and Cancer. And guess what? About 80% of the American population has one of these conditions. When you add in gluten intolerance (in America almost all grain products have unhealthy gluten) to the list of disadvantages of grains, the problems are magnified. About 20% of the population may require a high carbohydrate diet to lose weight, but even those should eliminate grains.

DO’s:

(1) Do eat protein (organic eggs, fish, etc.) for breakfast and drop the sugar foods (fruits, donuts, etc.). A high quality protein and vitamin shake such as Clearvite from Apex Energetics (my choice) can even replace breakfast for those who skip or eat poor breakfasts.

(2) Do eat HEALTHY CARBOHYDRATES in the form of heaping helpings of leafy green and all other colored vegetables as often as possible. This will not put stress on your insulin system.

(3) Cut out processed sugar and gluten products as much as possible

The challenge today is that it is cheap and effortless to eat poorly and it is expensive and labor intensive to have a healthy diet. At Brown Chiropractic Neurology, we specialize in well care where our motto is “healthy by choice, not by chance” and the truth is that today there is no chance to stay healthy without good choices, and that includes diet and lifestyle.

Sleep, sweet sleep. As those who know me can attest, this is my favorite topic. Studies have been conducted showing photos of sleep study participants to members of the opposite sex. The study compared people after 8 hours of perfect sleep to those having missed a whole nights  sleep. The subjects were told not to use any makeup or hair care for the photos. Those rating attractiveness and youth rated the sleeping subjects an average of at least 1 point higher (scale of 10) on the scales of youthfulness and attractiveness. The average was close to 2 points higher. For the vain among you, this should be enough. For those who are truly interested the the health effects that lead to a more attractive and youthful appearance, consider the following:

(1) Heart Disease and Diabetes – too much or too little sleep have been significantly linked to Heart Disease and Type 2 Diabetes.

(2) Cancer – disruption in sleep cycles have caused hormonal changes that effect melatonin release and has been related to tumor growth

(3) Weight – disruption of sleep cycles lead to dys-regulation of appetite and satiation hormones leading to weight gain.

(4) Immune Resistance – Proper sleep boosts the immune system and decreases your chances of viral infections.

(5) Memory and Learning – Proper sleep help regulate neurotansmitters leading to better short term memory and creativity.

Chronic Conditions that are aggravated by lack of sleep include: Depression, Anxiety, GI problems, Headaches, Memory Loss, Learning and Behavioral Problems, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Kidney Disease, and Hypertension.

PRICELESS SLEEP TIPS: (1) Make sure your bedroom is completely dark (2) Go to bed between 9pm and 11 pm every night. Tinker with the time until the right time for you is obvious (for me it is 9:30 -10:00pm) (3) Don’t watch TV or use computers for the last hour before bedtime and instead read inspirational literature (4) Pee before you sleep to decrease the possibility of waking up in the night (5) Use full spectrum light bulbs at the office or during the day to maximize light stimulation (6) Use low spectrum (blue) light bulbs at night or in the bedroom to promote sleepiness (7) DON’T work alternating shifts or NIGHT shifts as this is probably the worst thing in the world for normal circadian sleep.

You might ask ,”Isn’t bone loss just due to a lack of calcium like we have always heard? No. Not if you understand the mechanisms of how the immune system works. The human body has first line defense mechanisms which include the intestinal mucosa, respiratory system, skin, and blood brain barrier which are the first protections against foreign invaders. When the invaders (viruses and bacteria) get past the first defense, the T-Helper Cell systems (TH-1 and TH-2) kick in. In the first stage, (TH-1) the inflammatory immune system mobilizes to fight the foreign invaders. Once the invaders have been conquered, the second stage (Th-2) produces B cells to carry away the conquered invaders and signal the inflammatory army to return to the barracks. This is the scenario in a good immune system. When either the TH-1 or TH-2 system becomes dominant, there is a runaway of the dominant system resulting in autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s, Graves, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Addison’s Disease, Lupus, etc.. Osteoporosis, although not “classified” as an immune disease, follows this trajectory. In Osteoporosis, one of the TH-2 lymphocytes called Interleukin 6 will stimulate bone destruction (osteoclastic activity) resulting in a slight degree of decreased bone mineral density (BMD) called OSTEOPENIA, before it advances into full blown OSTEOPOROSIS. The standard medical treatment does not address the immune system one iota, but instead promotes the use of the drug FOSAMEX (side effects include osteonecrosis or loss of blood supply to the bone, GI dysfunction, anxiety, social avoidance, congestive heart failure, kidney failure, hypertension, inflammation, and the list goes on).

BROWN CHIROPRACTIC NEUROLOGY: How we are different is that we do not look at Osteoporosis as merely a loss of bone but as an immune failure. Without addressing the immune system, the osteoporosis can continue to progress resulting in more bone loss. Since the Fosamex drug therapy robs the blood supply to the bone and creates an inflammatory condition, my bet is on building up the immune system which will decrease inflammation and increase osteoblastic (bone building) activity.

Our treatment consists of supporting regulatory T cell systems with Vitamin D, Glutathione, Superoxide Dismutase, and Omega 3 Fatty Acids. We must also make sure the body is producing enough Hydrochloric Acid (HCL). In Chiropractic Neurology, we focus on 3 things: brain, metabolism (blood sugar, thyroid, liver, etc.) and structure. Ours is a drug free surgery free approach to wellness. We’d like to help!
