Most current prognostications project that 1 in 3 Caucasian Americans, 1 in 2 African Americans, and 1 in 2 Hispanic Americans  born after 2000 will become full blown diabetics. This condition alone will break the so called “health”  care system. How do we become diabetic? Type 2 or adult diabetes occurs when there is too much glucose in the blood. The body is unable to regulate glucose  because  insulin receptor sites malfunction. This condition is a societal problem caused by the Standard American Diet (SAD) and the standard American exercise (meaning couch potato-ism).

Stage 1: REACTIVE HYPOGLYCEMIA (low blood sugar/glucose) defined in FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE as a glucose reading below 85 and Lactic Acid Dehydrogenase (LDH) level below 140. Symptoms can include irritability if meals are missed, lightheaded if meals are missed, feeling shaky, jittery, or having tremors, craving sweets during the day, and eating relieves fatigue . Most adult onset Diabetics pass through this stage before insulin receptors sites begin shutting down leading to insulin resistance.

Stage 2: INSULIN RESISTANCE (high blood sugar/glucose) defined as elevated glucose and triglycerides (most evident when triglycerides are equal to or greater than total cholesterol). Symptoms include fatigue after meals, eating does not relieve fatigue or cravings for sugar, increased thirst and appetite, and frequent urination.

Stage 3: FULL BLOWN TYPE 2 DIABETES is a life threatening progression of Insulin Resistance resulting in elevated liver enzymes, high cortisol, sluggish detoxification, testosterone elevations in females and estrogen elevations in males – just to name a few. Diabetics are more likely to suffer from numerous  other debilitating conditions (including Heart Disease, Stroke, Bi-Polar Disorders) and generally take 3 times as long to heal from injuries and other medical conditions. Most people suffering from Peripheral Neuropathy cannot be helped without addressing blood sugar problems which affect nerve conduction.

A key point is that Type 2 Diabetes is completely preventable and, even when manifest, is treatable ( in most cases without insulin drugs). These preventive measures include with disciplined lifestyle changes, diet, supplements, and exercise. A complete blood analysis is necessary. An old faithful good book to read is “Sugar Blues” by William Duffy.

Why do mothers get adjustments during pregnancy? There are three trimesters in pregnancy that can be broken down into 4 stages. Each stage must progress without nervous system disturbance  in order to have a comfortable delivery for mom and to deliver a healthy baby. Chiropractic adjustments stimulate brain function by powerfully activating muscle spindles and joint mechanoreceptors (proprioception) which have the greatest sensory input  of all sensory modalities (sight, hearing, smell)  into brain function. the brain and central nervous system controls all bodily function including hormonal changes and fetal development. STAGE 1 Preconception: chiropractic care prior to conception helps regulate menstrual function. It promotes strength and balance to support pregnancy. Stage 2 Pregnancy: regular adjustments during pregnancny maintain flexibility and balance,  help prevent morning sickness, and help position the baby for optimal birthing position. Stage 3 Labor : Mothers under chiropractic care need less high tech and invasive procedures, report shorter less problematic births, and babies that move more easily through the birth canal. Stage 4 Post delivery: The less stress on the mothers nervous system the less stress on the baby’s spine. Breast feeding can be a problem if a baby with a stressed spine cannot turn his head to feed.

Schedule a chiropractic neurology check up for yourself if you are planning pregnancy or are pregnant or if you have a newborn. Relax, the adjustments that babies receive are gentle and different from those that you get.  A baby’s spine doesn’t have the chronic instability and muscle tightness of adults so the energy needed to adjust them is considerably less. Are adjustments safe? YES.

You might ask ,”Isn’t bone loss just due to a lack of calcium like we have always heard? No. Not if you understand the mechanisms of how the immune system works. The human body has first line defense mechanisms which include the intestinal mucosa, respiratory system, skin, and blood brain barrier which are the first protections against foreign invaders. When the invaders (viruses and bacteria) get past the first defense, the T-Helper Cell systems (TH-1 and TH-2) kick in. In the first stage, (TH-1) the inflammatory immune system mobilizes to fight the foreign invaders. Once the invaders have been conquered, the second stage (Th-2) produces B cells to carry away the conquered invaders and signal the inflammatory army to return to the barracks. This is the scenario in a good immune system. When either the TH-1 or TH-2 system becomes dominant, there is a runaway of the dominant system resulting in autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s, Graves, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Addison’s Disease, Lupus, etc.. Osteoporosis, although not “classified” as an immune disease, follows this trajectory. In Osteoporosis, one of the TH-2 lymphocytes called Interleukin 6 will stimulate bone destruction (osteoclastic activity) resulting in a slight degree of decreased bone mineral density (BMD) called OSTEOPENIA, before it advances into full blown OSTEOPOROSIS. The standard medical treatment does not address the immune system one iota, but instead promotes the use of the drug FOSAMEX (side effects include osteonecrosis or loss of blood supply to the bone, GI dysfunction, anxiety, social avoidance, congestive heart failure, kidney failure, hypertension, inflammation, and the list goes on).

BROWN CHIROPRACTIC NEUROLOGY: How we are different is that we do not look at Osteoporosis as merely a loss of bone but as an immune failure. Without addressing the immune system, the osteoporosis can continue to progress resulting in more bone loss. Since the Fosamex drug therapy robs the blood supply to the bone and creates an inflammatory condition, my bet is on building up the immune system which will decrease inflammation and increase osteoblastic (bone building) activity.

Our treatment consists of supporting regulatory T cell systems with Vitamin D, Glutathione, Superoxide Dismutase, and Omega 3 Fatty Acids. We must also make sure the body is producing enough Hydrochloric Acid (HCL). In Chiropractic Neurology, we focus on 3 things: brain, metabolism (blood sugar, thyroid, liver, etc.) and structure. Ours is a drug free surgery free approach to wellness. We’d like to help!

If you read about or see artists’ renditions of the Bubonic Plague era in Europe, you will notice that even though 1/3 of the population was wiped out, the other 2/3 survived. The survivors, surrounded by dead and dying, hauled the dead from the streets in wheel barrows .T he 2/3 that survived were exposed to the same bacteria that killed 1 out of 3 people. So why did they survive.? The reason is that the survivors were strong hosts with strong immune systems. Those who succumbed did not have strong immune systems.

Most people think of the immune system in passive terms (This thing got me or I caught this bug) as if critters (viruses, germs, bacteria, etc.) select who to attack (serendipity). Nothing could be further from the truth. People in the very same bacterial or viral environment have markedly  different reactions to the same exposures. What has to happen before you “catch” something? Well, for one thing, our digestive system is now understood to be responsible for 75% of human immunity. So those with bad digestion (usually with bad brains) will be vulnerable. Also, our vitamin D levels are probably the most crucial early defense against immune challenges. Then,  there are numerous bodily tissues and cells  involved in proper immune function, including but not limited to: T & B cells, Natural Killer (NK) cells, macrophages, and numerous other cellular messengers.

Recent studies point to what is called “functional crosstalk between the immune system and the thyroid. So if the thyroid is not working properly, it can effect immunity. In addition, immune signaling mediators such as cytokines and adjuvants can disrupt the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function. To complicate matters further, asymmetry of brain function (hemisphericity) can cause loss of immune resistance (left brain problem where one catches every bug or virus that comes along) or immune suppression (right brain problem where one has asthma, allergies, and psoriasis). So you see that the problem is not  the  invaders but in the host’s resistance to those invaders. Finally, most research today points to a strong immune system being a virtual roadblock to development of cancer cells.

Sounds weird, but that is what the latest research shows. Insomniacs are near and dear to me. I was one of you and I can help. We need sleep to regenerate and repair. The brain-stem reticular formation has a top or rostral part and a bottom or caudal part. The rostral reticular formation allows one to wake and be alert. The caudal reticular formation allows us to sleep. There has to be a balance. When the rostral reticular formation is firing too high, one cannot relax and go to sleep. The rostral reticular formation is very sensitive to oxygen and carbon dioxide relationships. The reasons for high firing rostral reticular formation are many and complex. Stress (either psychological or disease of the body such as autoimmune disorders, blood sugar, thyroid, kidney, heart, liver, adrenal, or anemic conditions to name a very few) is usually the culprit. This is not to say that the person FEELS conscious stress but that a hidden stress may be altering sleep patterns.
What is different about chiropractic neurology’s approach is that we determine the root cause as opposed to just giving an herb or supplement to relax the patient. Yes, these things are a part of our approach, but brain-stem function must be addressed to fix the problem. Those loosing sleep on a regular basis are at risk of multiple health conditions, including but not limited to cancer, heart disease, and brain disorders.
At Brown Chiropractic Neurology, with brain based therapies, we would like to help.

With migraines, the normal dilation and non-dilation of blood vessels loses homeostasis (balance) due to failure of BRAIN STEM mechanisms What does that mean? When the brain stem loses equilibrium, the brain releases chemicals which inflame the brain tissue and cause aberrant expansion and contraction of the blood vessels in the brain and the body. This is thought to be the cause of the headache. There are two root causes of migraines: (1) increased sympathetic nervous system tone which means that the freeze, fight, or flight mechanisms are dominant and the body’s active mechanisms are ramped up causing high blood pressure, sweating, vasodilation, increased temperature, etc. OR (2) decreased parasympathetic nervous system tone which would normally allow sleep, digestion, and relaxation.

The brain stem receives output from the neocortex (the part of the brain which allows us to reason). This advanced part of the brain signals the brain stem to have a proper balance of sympathetic and parasympathetic activity. When there is a disturbance to the neocortex or the brain stem, the result can be abnormal blood vessel dilation and non-dilation, which causes migraines. Until the brain stem activity is normalized, most drug or physiological therapy will temporarily reduce symptoms at best.

In Chiropractic Neurology, we evaluate brain/spine connections to determine if there is an over-active sympathetic system and if one hemisphere of the brain is diminished in function (hemisphericity). Only by creating a calmer sympathetic system can a long term solution to migraines be achieved.
