Like a country with geographical barriers to invasion, the human body has barriers to bacteria, viruses, and other bad guys breaking and entering. When the army fails to protect the country, foreign invaders can overwhelm to country. The same thing happens with the human body. What is the body’s army? Look at the borders of your body as the skin, the lining in your intestines, brain, etc.. When these barriers leak, antigens (undigested food, parasites, chemical toxins, molds, and bacteria) invade and cause an immune response. Soldiers (macrophages) envelope the invader and call for help. If the help just right, the body destroys the invader and the army is sent back to the barracks. If the army over reacts, then innocent civilians are killed or to put it another way, the body mistakes its own healthy tissue as a foreign invader and targets it for elimination. On the other hand, if the army is not strong enough, the invaders win. In autoimmune thyroid Hashimoto’s Disease, either the army over reacts or the invaders win. Either way healthy tissue is tagged as a bad guy and the immune system designed to protect you slowly eats away at healthy tissue. Ironically, the thyroid gland has a similar molecular structure to GLUTEN. In Hashimoto’s, the individual is gluten intolerant and when gluten enters the body the autoimmune response not only targets gluten for elimination but the thyroid as well because it can’t tell the difference.

IMPORTANT: If the thyroid is being destroyed by the immune system, why is the standard medical treatment targeted treating a healthy thyroid when the problem is not thyroid but an immune attack on the thyroid. All thyroid and endocrine societies in the U.S. agree that more than 50% of all thyroid conditions are autoimmune Hashimoto’s Disease. So why are most people with thyroid conditions not tested for autoimmunity? The reason is because the only medical treatment available (steroids) is worse than the effects of the disease itself. So the only thing standard medicine is left with is to treat the thyroid symptomatically as the thyroid continues to be destroyed by the autoimmune reaction. The medication dosage continues to increase as the thyroid is ultimately completely destroyed and the person them must remain on thyroid medications for life.

THERE IS ANOTHER WAY! Don’t wait until it’s too late. The key is to clean up the leaky barriers, especially the gut, and then to support the immune system thus slowing down the immune response and subsequent thyroid tissue destruction.

Thyroid functions:

(12) Estrogen function – estrogen must become water soluble to be eliminated from the body. Hypothyroidism prevents to chemical process that makes this happen. The result is proliferative estrogen which is estrogen that should have left the body. This “bad” estrogen leads to uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, and breast cancer.

(13)  Protein digestion – stomach acid digests proteins. Those with hypothyroidism have low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) and thus poor ability to digest proteins resulting in a protein deficiency. Restoring thyroid function can, many cases, restore proper acidity.

(14) Hot flashes – the thyroid maintains body temperature, but the ovaries and adrenals also affect body temperature. The symptoms of hot flashes and night sweats, due to hypothyroidism, can be confused with peri-menopause as well. If the thyroid is the problem, other thyroid symptoms will be present.

(15) Progesterone function – progesterone improves the communication of thyroid receptors and stimulates thyroid peroxidase (TPO) production as well. Symptoms of a progesterone deficiency include depression, headaches, inability to lose weight, and heavy menstrual bleeding.

(16) Anemia – low stomach acid from hypothyroidism leads to anemia of B-12 and folic acid deficiency. Some hypothyroid patients have pernicious anemia, an autoimmune disease that destroys the stomach lining and thus the absorption of B-12. Also since hypothyroidism causes a deficiency of stomach acid, iron absorption is difficult.

(17) Heart function – hypothyroidism leads to high levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that increases the risk of heart disease, neurodegeneration, and dementia.

Continued from part 5……

Functions of the thyroid

(8) Moods and emotions – hypothyroidism causes adrenal weakness and as a result the adrenal don’t have healthy communication with the part of the brain called hypothalamus/pituitary/adrenal (HPA) axis. With poor HPA functoin, fat doesn’t burn resulting in weight gain. Also serotonin and dopamine aren’t produced in proper ratios resulting in depression, anxiety, and lethargy.

(9) Proper stomach acidity – proper stomach acid prevents reflux and heartburn because you can completely digest your food. Poorly digested food lingers in gut and rots up into the esophagus causing heartburn. HCL or hydrochloric acid is what prevents gut rot and prevents bad guys such as parasites, viruses, and bacteria from dominating the digestive system and making you miserable. In hypothyroid states, the hormone gastrin decreases which leads to loss of HCL production.

(10) liver detoxificaton – when thyroid function is low, the liver enzymes that detoxify just don’t mature leading to poor waste detoxification and waste clearance.

(11) growth hormones -growth hormones (GH) regenerate cells and tissues (even in adults). Growth hormones are released from the pituitary when more growth or more cells are needed. Thyroid hormones are necessary for GH to make insulin like growth factor (IGF-1) and finish the task of growing or creating new cells.

Stay tuned for part 7 as thyroid functions continues….

Sweet potatoes, kale, broccoli, sunflower seeds, black beans, squash, cabbage, and almonds are foods we should eat daily for optimum health. Foods that should be avoided include fried foods, processed foods, junk foods, sodas (especially those containing corn syrup and “diet” ingredients). Take one day a week, for yourself, to do nothing but have fun.

In 1912, a German publication delineated the first Autoimmune Disease ever, Hashimoto’s Disease, named after the Japanese physician who first described it. Since that time, Autoimmune Diseases, which were once rare, are accelerating at a disturbing rate. Why does an immune system turn on the person and attack HIM or HER instead of the toxic invader. Why does the body tag its own tissue as an enemy? In functional medicine, we believe that the stresses of modern life, especially in America, have led to this near catastrophic plague that traditional medicine has no answer for. To the best of our knowledge today, once your body identifies its own cells as foreign, then it is there for life. The treatment is to support the immune system with healthy doses of Vitamin D, Glutathionne, Super Oxicide Dismutase, and all the other known immune boosting supplements. Reducing stress is also a lifestyle necessity for all Autoimmune patients. Stress comes in many forms (psychological, environmental, nutritional, etc.). 20% of Americans have Autoimmune Diseases and 75% of those are women. 90% of Hypothyroid patients are Autoimmune.

Eat 3-5 servings of both vegetables and fruits each day and avoid the 3 white poisons – sugar, white flour, and salt. It is estimated that, regardless of
who “wins” the health care coverage battle, the sick care costs in America will bankrupt the country. The solution to this crisis is to reduce stress, clean up the diets, and exercise properly. It sounds so simple but it is not. America is a stressed out society more than any in history. Our food sources contain less and less nutritional value and we exercise less than most civilizations in history.

Hypothyroidism treated with prescription thyroid hormones is rarely successful. There are numerous reasons why the thyroid is under active including a sluggish pituitary gland, poor gut function, and immune dysregulation. It would surprise most people to know the most common
cause of Hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s Disease, an Autoimmune Disorder that destroys the thyroid. This means that a person’s immune system against foreign invaders tagged its own tissue for termination. Sadly, the traditional medical system doesn’t test for autoimmunity because the only treatment (steroids) is worse than the disease. So the thyroid is treated symptomatically to temporarily reduce symptoms while the autoimmune attack continues to destroy the thyroid. Nutritionally supporting the thyroid is important because many body systems can become impaired due to poor thyroid function.
