Thyroid functions:

(12) Estrogen function – estrogen must become water soluble to be eliminated from the body. Hypothyroidism prevents to chemical process that makes this happen. The result is proliferative estrogen which is estrogen that should have left the body. This “bad” estrogen leads to uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, and breast cancer.

(13)  Protein digestion – stomach acid digests proteins. Those with hypothyroidism have low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) and thus poor ability to digest proteins resulting in a protein deficiency. Restoring thyroid function can, many cases, restore proper acidity.

(14) Hot flashes – the thyroid maintains body temperature, but the ovaries and adrenals also affect body temperature. The symptoms of hot flashes and night sweats, due to hypothyroidism, can be confused with peri-menopause as well. If the thyroid is the problem, other thyroid symptoms will be present.

(15) Progesterone function – progesterone improves the communication of thyroid receptors and stimulates thyroid peroxidase (TPO) production as well. Symptoms of a progesterone deficiency include depression, headaches, inability to lose weight, and heavy menstrual bleeding.

(16) Anemia – low stomach acid from hypothyroidism leads to anemia of B-12 and folic acid deficiency. Some hypothyroid patients have pernicious anemia, an autoimmune disease that destroys the stomach lining and thus the absorption of B-12. Also since hypothyroidism causes a deficiency of stomach acid, iron absorption is difficult.

(17) Heart function – hypothyroidism leads to high levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that increases the risk of heart disease, neurodegeneration, and dementia.
