According to research published in 2011 in the British Medical Journal, there is a 30% increased risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack) in those who take 500 mg  or more of calcium per day. WOW! But we’ve always heard that calcium builds strong bones. Well, the thinking has changed and its not just from this one study. There are many more.

Why aren’t you hearing about these studies?

(Clin J Am Soc Nephrol 2010) – this study concludes that there is a total lack of support or research supporting the contention that calcium supplements reduces the risk of fracture.

(Am J Clin Nutr 2007) – this study says calcium from dietary sources has more favorable effects on bone health than those from supplements.

(BMJ 2010) – this study shows calcium supplements without co-administered Vitamin D are associated with increased risk for heart attack

These a just a few of the studies involving the heart and bone dangers of calcium supplementation. This calcium supplement mistake can also negatively affect prostate health and longevity in men. Don’t get me wrong, calcium from whole food can extend your lifespan. It is however, not true for calcium supplements. Be informed and read the literature. Tune in later this week for a follow up blog.

Take 35 IU’s per pound of your body weight in Vitamin D3 per day for optimum immune health. Vitamin D3 is the most essential vitamin for immune function, and most Americans are deficient. Of all the blood lab panels I do on patients who come to see me, 80+ % are deficient in Vitamin D. If you want to be able to resist all the bad viruses and bacteria out there, make sure you are flush on this critical supplement (actually it’s a steroid hormone mislabeled vitamin).

We measure Vitamin D levels on our standard blood panels for patients. Autoimmune patients need to have higher levels of Vitamin D than those with normal immune systems. Our office specializes in neurological, immunological, and metabolic problems.

A popular “health” myth is that soy is great, soy is good. Traditionally, that may have been true. With  modern processed food, unfortunately it is not the case.

LITTLE KNOWN FACTS : (1) Phytoestogens (plant substances that have the same effects as estrogens), found in modern soy products, are powerful endocrine system disruptors (2) infant soy formula inundates the bloodstream with female hormones that inhibit testosterone levels associated with learning and developmental delays in boys (3) Soy fed girls go through early puberty (always a bad thing).

SOY DANGERS:

(1) Synthetic (toxic) vitamin D is added to soy milk. This increases the body’s need for legitimate vitamin D3.

(2) Processed soy protein produces cancer causing nitrosamines.

(3) Soy foods contain aluminum (toxic heavy metal) that causes kidney and central nervous system damage.

(4) MSG and other neurotoxins are added to soy to hide it’s unpleasant taste.

(5) Soy phytoestrogens can cause infertility and cause breast cancer.

(6) It is a myth that soy products increase your sex life, protect against heart disease, provide complete protein, or protect against cancer.

(7) Infants fed only on soy formula have receive the equivalent amount of estrogen as taking 4 birth control pills per day

If you carefully and painstakingly review the massive amount of  research on soy, you will reach the conclusion that the risks associated with soy far out weigh the possible benefits. The critical distinction that must be made is between the huge difference between fermented and non-fermented soy. The healthy Asian people who enjoy the benefits of natto, miso, soy sauce, and tempeh do so eating FERMNETED soy foods. It’s the un-fermented soy (containing genetically modified food or GMO’s) that is destructive to health and wellness. Sadly, the American public has been duped into thinking that tofu, soy milk, cheese, and ice creams are healthy.

Americans should eliminate soy products from their diets especially if they have:

– food allergies

-pregnancy

-kidney stones

-thyroid disorders

-autoimmune disorders

-fertility problems

-cancer

-brain damage

Thyroid hormones and bone metabolism are intimately connected. Most people still think that bone density and strength are determined by calcium levels and that calcium supplementation and calcium rich foods are the answer. Wrong. Bone metabolism has more to do with vitamin D levels, autoimmunity, and thyroid function. There are two things to understand: the impact of thyroid states on bone DENSITY and the impacts of thyroid HORMONES on bone QUALITY. New research reveals that denser bone does not equate to stronger bone. Bone strength or resistance to fracture is not easily measured by bone densitometry which is what the typical medical doctor uses to “assess” bone strength.  Bone density and bone strength are not same thing. In traditional medicine, doctors are taught that bone density is the measure of bone strength and the response to pharmaceutical osteoporosis treatment. In recent years this concept has changed to include a number of characteristics that make up bone quality. BONE QUALITY  is a composite of properties that make the bone resist fractures which includes bone structure, bone damage, collagen quality, mineral crystal size, and bone turnover. So denser bone is not always stronger bone, younger bone density is stronger than older bone density, and changes in density account for only part of the risk factors.

Lack of thyroid hormones will alter normal growth during childhood. Hyperthyroidism is associated with an increased risk of for fractures. Adult hypothyroid patients exhibit higher than normal bone density (not strength) so hypothyroidism is associated with increased risk fractures before and after diagnosis. Those with suppressed levels of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) will lose bone and have higher fracture rates. Those with nomal TSH levels will have no increase in fracture risk.

At Brown Chiropractic Neurology, we perform blood, saliva, stool, analysis to determine where the cause of an individuals problems are. Only by looking at a complete functional analysis can we determine the proper course of treatment. Simply increasing bone density by use of pharmaceuticals will not decrease risk of fracture and falls (#1 cause of death over 65).

You might ask ,”Isn’t bone loss just due to a lack of calcium like we have always heard? No. Not if you understand the mechanisms of how the immune system works. The human body has first line defense mechanisms which include the intestinal mucosa, respiratory system, skin, and blood brain barrier which are the first protections against foreign invaders. When the invaders (viruses and bacteria) get past the first defense, the T-Helper Cell systems (TH-1 and TH-2) kick in. In the first stage, (TH-1) the inflammatory immune system mobilizes to fight the foreign invaders. Once the invaders have been conquered, the second stage (Th-2) produces B cells to carry away the conquered invaders and signal the inflammatory army to return to the barracks. This is the scenario in a good immune system. When either the TH-1 or TH-2 system becomes dominant, there is a runaway of the dominant system resulting in autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s, Graves, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Addison’s Disease, Lupus, etc.. Osteoporosis, although not “classified” as an immune disease, follows this trajectory. In Osteoporosis, one of the TH-2 lymphocytes called Interleukin 6 will stimulate bone destruction (osteoclastic activity) resulting in a slight degree of decreased bone mineral density (BMD) called OSTEOPENIA, before it advances into full blown OSTEOPOROSIS. The standard medical treatment does not address the immune system one iota, but instead promotes the use of the drug FOSAMEX (side effects include osteonecrosis or loss of blood supply to the bone, GI dysfunction, anxiety, social avoidance, congestive heart failure, kidney failure, hypertension, inflammation, and the list goes on).

BROWN CHIROPRACTIC NEUROLOGY: How we are different is that we do not look at Osteoporosis as merely a loss of bone but as an immune failure. Without addressing the immune system, the osteoporosis can continue to progress resulting in more bone loss. Since the Fosamex drug therapy robs the blood supply to the bone and creates an inflammatory condition, my bet is on building up the immune system which will decrease inflammation and increase osteoblastic (bone building) activity.

Our treatment consists of supporting regulatory T cell systems with Vitamin D, Glutathione, Superoxide Dismutase, and Omega 3 Fatty Acids. We must also make sure the body is producing enough Hydrochloric Acid (HCL). In Chiropractic Neurology, we focus on 3 things: brain, metabolism (blood sugar, thyroid, liver, etc.) and structure. Ours is a drug free surgery free approach to wellness. We’d like to help!

The new buzzword in chronic health problems is AUTOIMMUNE and what that means is the body identifies it’s own tissue (thyroid, kidney, adrenals, etc.) as foreign invaders and starts attacking itself. Treatments of autoimmune diseases usually consist of treating the attacked organ rather than boosting the immune system. This is tragic. For instance, autoimmune thyroid is treated by prescription drugs for hypothyroidism (Synthroid, Levathroid, etc.) without any recommendations for improving immunity.

The first thing to do in building your immune system is to make sure your vitamin D levels are OPTIMAL not just adequate. Blood work is necessary to determine your levels and the laboratory range of 32 is not nearly enough. I like to see my patients in the 60 and above range. Another fallacy is that if you spend enough time in the sun, you will not be vitamin D deficient. We are finding that, even in sunny San Diego, landscapers who work outdoors in tank tops are deficient. Get yours measured.

Why is this vitamin D (actually it is not a vitamin but a hormone produced by cholesterol) so important? Because it can cut, by almost 50%, MOST of the most devastating and costly diseases of modern man – cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and dementia.

At Brown Chiropractic Neurology,.we optimize our patients chances of a healthy life with a complete functional blood work analysis which includes vitamin D levels. Visit us today at – browncnc.com. Ph: (303) 986-7600
