Why do so many thyroid problems begin after pregnancy?

(1) Pregnancy decreases pituitary function. Located at the base of the brain, the pituitary is the guiding system for hormones. Pregnant women can have existing, blood sugar, adrenal, hormone, food tolerance, and gut problems  that depress the pituitary without even knowing it. Consequently, the pituitary fails to release enough thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) to stimulate the thyroid. So the thyroid can’t work if the pituitary doesn’t send the signals. For most women who fall into this category, it results in hypothyroidism (low thyroid) and postpartum depression.

(2) Pregnancy lowers  immune function and can trigger autoimmune conditions including Hashimoto’s Disease (autoimmune low thyroid). Research indicates that Hashimoto’s is more prevalent in women due to the complexity of the hormonal systems.

(3) The newborn child can also be affected by those moms with leaky gut, adrenal, blood sugar and immune dysfunction. Not only does research indicate that brain development in the child may be impaired, but in those with a genetic predisposition to Autoimmune Disease,  Hashimoto’s may be triggered in the child. Research also indicates that the root cause of many cases of Autism is a compromised immune system from leaky gut.

Cortisol ( a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland) is crucial to thyroid function. Cortisol raises blood sugar (glucose) levels when they go too low. Over time, if the blood sugar goes too low it exhausts the adrenals leading to the corruption of thyroid activities. This dip in blood sugar also results in exhaustion of the Hypothalamus/Pituitary/Adrenal (HPA) axis. This HPA axis is controlled by the primitive brain function in the area of survival. Stress in all its many forms (diet, lifestyle, exposure to toxins, etc.) is greater today in America than at any time in history. Stress leads to adrenal failure and adrenal failure leads to thyroid malfunction including functional hypothyroidism (under active thyroid). Over time the loss of both adrenal and thyroid function leads to gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction including infection, inflammation, and dysbiosis. This in turns weakens the thyroid and the adrenals.  You can see that this domino effect can lead to a host of  symptoms that make detective work difficult. So many people with blood sugar and adrenal failure are not being appropriately treated

The thyroid  is like a giant switchboard where calls from all over the country (body) are routed. Hormones in the brain fire messages to the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland then fires messages to the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland fires messages to the liver. You get the picture. It is now being called “thyroid crosstalk” and the thyroid literally communicates to every cell in every system in your body. Any breakdown in the switchboard and some of the communication is jammed.

Example: The body notifies the brain that metabolism needs to increase because it is too cold. The brain then fires a message to the hypothalamus (a relay station between the nervous system and the endocrine system) to go faster and heat things up. The hypothalamus fires another message through a chemical messenger (TRH) to another gland called the pituitary gland. When TRH delivers it’s message to the pituitary, the pituitary releases thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH tells the thyroid to let in iodine which stimulates another hormone called thyroid peroxidase (TPO). TPO combines with iodine to create the thyroid hormones T4 and T3.

Standard lab testing done by medical doctors only measures TSH levels. This doesn’t account for the fact that other factors such as pituitary function, autoimmune function, or even if thyroid hormones are effective throughout the rest of the body.

There are crucial relationships between the thyroid gland and the reproductive/endocrine systems in males and females.

In females, thyroid imbalances  lead to  pituitary-gonadal dysfunctions which include alterations in FSH and LH hormone coordination and release, ovarian FSH receptor site sensitivity, and peripheral progesterone receptor sensitivity. These imbalances lead to miscarriages, ovarian cysts, infertility,  migraines, weight gain, mood disorders, depression, and abnormal menstrual cycles. Sometimes the endocrine symptoms are so pronounced that the thyroid culprit is overlooked. Conversely, the use of synthetic hormones such as birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy (HRT), in addition to insulin surges and stress responses, lead to abnormal spikes of hormones such as estrogen, cortisol, and testosterone, which disrupts health thyroid function.

In males, thyroid imbalances can lead to pronounced  male hormone imbalances which include decreased testosterone, altered pituitary-gonadalfunction, obesity, exhaustion, cognitive decline, erectile dysfunction, and depression.  This clinical presentation will largely be ignored because the male hormone imbalances will obscure the thyroid culprit. Many men start taking synthetic testosterone which further disrupts thyroid metabolism.

At Brown Chiropractic  Neurology, we look for the root cause of ANY metabolic disorder. As you can see, sometimes the problems are not where the symptoms present.

Science clearly indicates that there is functional communication or crosstalk between the brain and the thyroid gland. Like the immune system, the brain is powerfully influenced by the thyroid. Thyroid hormones have consequential effects on the microglia cells which are the brain’s first defense against an attack (inflammation). Thyroid hormones also significantly influence neurotransmitter pathways. Neurotransmitters are chemicals which relay, modulate, and amplify signals between a neuron and another cell. This makes sense since thyroid sufferers develop a huge array of mood, neurological, and cognitive disorders. Neurotransmitters are important for coordinating the feed back loop between the hypothalamus (which maintains homeostasis through the autonomic nervous system), pituitary (which is the master gland of the endocrine system), and thyroid (which takes iodine and converts it into thyroid hormones). This is called the HPT axis.

There are interactions between neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, GABA, and acetylcholine), microglia, and the thyroid. Thyroid hormone support neurogenesis, synaptogenesis, dendritic growth, axonal growth, neuronal migration, and precursor cell proliferation. This results in greater plasticity (brain shaping and forming), greater brain function, and lessening of neuro-degeneration.

At Brown Chiropractic Neurology, blood, saliva, stool and/or other necessary analysis is done that includes thyroid antibody (proteins against foreign invaders) testing. This is not done in traditional medicine circles. Why not? Because the treatment (steroids) for autoimmune disease causes side effects that are worse that the disease. So in allopathic medicine, there is not a treatment for the immune problem and the thyroid is treated as a common hypo – or hyper-thyroid condition. While thyroid hormones may be necessary, the treatment alone will not address the autoimmunity and the condition will continue to worsen. If you suffer from autoimmune conditions, we’d like to help.

The indexed scientific research now clearly indicates a functional CROSSTALK between the thyroid and the immune system. Thyroid hormones exhibit influences on cellular messenger systems and promote regulation of T- and B- cell activity. T- cells are white blood cells that tailor the body’s immune response to specific pathogens (disease). B- cells promote antibodies (proteins) necessary to fight off infections.  Thyroid hormones also influence cellular apoptosis (pruning of unwanted cells) and cytokine (small proteins affecting interactions between cells) release. In all our cases of thyroid malfunction, we consider immune deregulation and challenges.

Immune signaling mediators (cytokines, and adjuvants) have been found to disrupt ALL aspects of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis which regulates hormones and thermoregulatory systems. These mediators also affect thyroid receptor site activity, transcriptional expressions, and peripheral metabolism. So immune disorders have a great potential to disrupt thyroid physiology (Hashimoto’s Disease, Graves Disease).

At Brown Chiropractic Neurology, lab work is performed that includes thyroid antibody (proteins against foreign invaders) testing. This is not done in traditional medicine circles. Why not? Because the treatment (steroids) for autoimmune disease causes side effects that are worse than the autoimmune disease. So in traditional medicine there is NO TREATMENT for the immune problem and the thyroid is treated as  just a common hypo- or hyper-thyroid. While thyroid hormones may be necessary, the treatment alone will not address their autoimmunity and the condition typically worsens. If you suffer from autoimmune conditions, we’d like to help.

Take this test to help determine the state of your thyroid function. Answer 0 (never or seldom), 1 (infrequently or sometimes), 2 (frequently), 3 (all or most of the time

THYROID

Thinning of the outer third of the eyebrows  0, 1, 2, 3
Tired and sluggish most of the time  0, 1, 2, 3
Cold all over especially hands and feet   0, 1, 2, 3
Require excessive sleep to function  0, 1, 2, 3
Mental sluggishness   0, 1, 2, 3
Dryness of skin or scalp   0, 1, 2, 3
Thinning of facial or genital hair  0, 1, 2, 3
Excessive hair falling out    0, 1, 2, 3
Depression, no motivation  0, 1, 2, 3
Difficult, infrequent bowel movements   0, 1, 2, 3
Morning headaches that wear off later  0, 1, 2, 3
Weight gain even on low calorie diets  0,1, 2, 3

If you answered mostly 2’s and 3’s, it is probable that your thyroid is not functioning properly.

PITUITARY

Inward trembling   0, 1, 2, 3
Heart palpatations  0, 1, 2, 3
Night sweats  0, 1, 2, 3
Increased pulse even at rest  0, 1, 2, 3
Nervous and emotional  0, 1, 2, 3
Insomnia  0, 1, 2, 3
Difficulty gaining weight  0, 1, 2, 3

If you answered mostly 2’s and 3’s, it is probable that you have: (1) a pituitary problem (2) a primary pituitary problem with secondary thyroid symptoms (3) an autoimmune problem. With thyroid issues, it is imperative to perform a blood panel (including anti-body testing) to determine  which of the above three it is. Note: 90% of thyroid sufferers today have autoimmunity (mostly Hashimoto’s Disease). In functional medicine, we believe strongly that the way to treat autoimmune thyroid, as opposed to regular hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, is as different as night and day. If you are suffering from thyroid symptoms, we would like to help with drug free treatments whenever possible.

If you read about or see artists’ renditions of the Bubonic Plague era in Europe, you will notice that even though 1/3 of the population was wiped out, the other 2/3 survived. The survivors, surrounded by dead and dying, hauled the dead from the streets in wheel barrows .T he 2/3 that survived were exposed to the same bacteria that killed 1 out of 3 people. So why did they survive.? The reason is that the survivors were strong hosts with strong immune systems. Those who succumbed did not have strong immune systems.

Most people think of the immune system in passive terms (This thing got me or I caught this bug) as if critters (viruses, germs, bacteria, etc.) select who to attack (serendipity). Nothing could be further from the truth. People in the very same bacterial or viral environment have markedly  different reactions to the same exposures. What has to happen before you “catch” something? Well, for one thing, our digestive system is now understood to be responsible for 75% of human immunity. So those with bad digestion (usually with bad brains) will be vulnerable. Also, our vitamin D levels are probably the most crucial early defense against immune challenges. Then,  there are numerous bodily tissues and cells  involved in proper immune function, including but not limited to: T & B cells, Natural Killer (NK) cells, macrophages, and numerous other cellular messengers.

Recent studies point to what is called “functional crosstalk between the immune system and the thyroid. So if the thyroid is not working properly, it can effect immunity. In addition, immune signaling mediators such as cytokines and adjuvants can disrupt the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function. To complicate matters further, asymmetry of brain function (hemisphericity) can cause loss of immune resistance (left brain problem where one catches every bug or virus that comes along) or immune suppression (right brain problem where one has asthma, allergies, and psoriasis). So you see that the problem is not  the  invaders but in the host’s resistance to those invaders. Finally, most research today points to a strong immune system being a virtual roadblock to development of cancer cells.

At Brown  Chiropractic Neurology, utilizing  brain based therapeutics, we specialize in functional neurology and nutrition.
