Why do so many thyroid problems begin after pregnancy?

(1) Pregnancy decreases pituitary function. Located at the base of the brain, the pituitary is the guiding system for hormones. Pregnant women can have existing, blood sugar, adrenal, hormone, food tolerance, and gut problems  that depress the pituitary without even knowing it. Consequently, the pituitary fails to release enough thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) to stimulate the thyroid. So the thyroid can’t work if the pituitary doesn’t send the signals. For most women who fall into this category, it results in hypothyroidism (low thyroid) and postpartum depression.

(2) Pregnancy lowers  immune function and can trigger autoimmune conditions including Hashimoto’s Disease (autoimmune low thyroid). Research indicates that Hashimoto’s is more prevalent in women due to the complexity of the hormonal systems.

(3) The newborn child can also be affected by those moms with leaky gut, adrenal, blood sugar and immune dysfunction. Not only does research indicate that brain development in the child may be impaired, but in those with a genetic predisposition to Autoimmune Disease,  Hashimoto’s may be triggered in the child. Research also indicates that the root cause of many cases of Autism is a compromised immune system from leaky gut.

Like a country with geographical barriers to invasion, the human body has barriers to bacteria, viruses, and other bad guys breaking and entering. When the army fails to protect the country, foreign invaders can overwhelm to country. The same thing happens with the human body. What is the body’s army? Look at the borders of your body as the skin, the lining in your intestines, brain, etc.. When these barriers leak, antigens (undigested food, parasites, chemical toxins, molds, and bacteria) invade and cause an immune response. Soldiers (macrophages) envelope the invader and call for help. If the help just right, the body destroys the invader and the army is sent back to the barracks. If the army over reacts, then innocent civilians are killed or to put it another way, the body mistakes its own healthy tissue as a foreign invader and targets it for elimination. On the other hand, if the army is not strong enough, the invaders win. In autoimmune thyroid Hashimoto’s Disease, either the army over reacts or the invaders win. Either way healthy tissue is tagged as a bad guy and the immune system designed to protect you slowly eats away at healthy tissue. Ironically, the thyroid gland has a similar molecular structure to GLUTEN. In Hashimoto’s, the individual is gluten intolerant and when gluten enters the body the autoimmune response not only targets gluten for elimination but the thyroid as well because it can’t tell the difference.

IMPORTANT: If the thyroid is being destroyed by the immune system, why is the standard medical treatment targeted treating a healthy thyroid when the problem is not thyroid but an immune attack on the thyroid. All thyroid and endocrine societies in the U.S. agree that more than 50% of all thyroid conditions are autoimmune Hashimoto’s Disease. So why are most people with thyroid conditions not tested for autoimmunity? The reason is because the only medical treatment available (steroids) is worse than the effects of the disease itself. So the only thing standard medicine is left with is to treat the thyroid symptomatically as the thyroid continues to be destroyed by the autoimmune reaction. The medication dosage continues to increase as the thyroid is ultimately completely destroyed and the person them must remain on thyroid medications for life.

THERE IS ANOTHER WAY! Don’t wait until it’s too late. The key is to clean up the leaky barriers, especially the gut, and then to support the immune system thus slowing down the immune response and subsequent thyroid tissue destruction.

What do top athletes do that separate them from the herd? Other than natural ability combined with hard work? They are always searching for the “edge” for ways to improve – even fractions of a second for Lindsey Vonn in the downhill ski race can mean the difference between a gold medal and obscurity. ALL of these top performers today are diet fanatics and Lance Armstrong is even reported to weigh his food.

Dr. Brown’s fine peak performance tips:
(1) Optimize energy systems by supporting a healthy brain and intestinal flora. Probiotics and omega 3 fatty acids promote symbiosis between brain and gut.  Why do I associate brain and gut? Because most people with good brains have good guts. The gut is considered the 2nd brain and is responsible for 75% of your immune system. Immune compromised athletes rarely excel, not to mention that a leaky gut fails to deliver fuel to make the muscles work.

(2) Get as much fiber in your diet as possible. Regularity promotes optimal performance. Try beans, peas, legumes, apricots, raspberries, figs, plums, pears, apples, broccoli, cherries, bananas, brussels sprouts, coconuts, and baked potatoes (with skin).

(3) Get 8 hours of sleep EVERY night. Some studies (and my personal experience) show that the hours slept before midnight are worth twice as much as after.

(4) Turn on your brain and central nervous system with chiropractic adjustments and massage. Top performers such as Joe Montana, Tiger Woods, and Lance Armstrong keep their edge with regular adjustments and freely admit that they could not perform at the highest level without spinal and extremity adjustments.

(5) Limit alcohol. No explanation needed

(6) Thank you for not smoking!

(7) Eliminate stress. Chill out – literally. Read spiritual or inspirational literature before going to sleep and NEVER watch the (bad) news that starts at 11 pm every night.

When the brain or the thyroid degenerate, the most common symptoms are BRAIN FOG, DEPRESSION and FATIGUE. In our office, we notice when a new patient comes in and “had trouble getting here”, comes in late, has trouble filling out paperwork, and taking their history takes forever. The brain is just not working and the question is why? Science has proven without a doubt that depression stems from decreased frontal lobe activation. The frontal lobe is the ” lobe of humanity” or the lobe of executive function and it separates us from the beasts of the field. There are basically two models for depression: (1) thyroid malfunction and (2) cytokine inflammation leading to decreased nerve conduction. Cytokines are small signaling molecules secreted by glial cells. The majority of depressed patients have a leaky gut and inflammation. The gut is considered the 2nd brain and is responsible for 70% of immune function. Cytokine inflammation caused by abnormal glial cell activity leads to brain fog. Glial cells are the “scaffolding” of the brain, keeping neurons alive. Some thyroid patients will not respond to anti-depressants until inflammatory cytokines and leaky gut are calmed down. With persistent brain fog, healthy glial cell activity must be restored. With gluten (wheat, hops, etc.) exposure, brain fog may last from days to weeks. Gluten exposures will break down the blood brain barrier (BBB) allowing toxins that should normally be screened out to pass into the brain. This is why we recommend all thyroid patients get on a gluten free diet. people suffering  with hypothyroidism will produce less serotonin (the feel good neurotransmitter) so they become depressed. THE CURRENT DRUG MODEL DOES NOTHING TO RAISE THE AMOUNT OF NEUROTRANSMITTER but in functional medicine we can. The drugs’ temporary effects last no more than two years because they burn out. Hashimoto’s disease (autoimmune hypothyroid) triggers blood sugar, gluten, and adrenal problems resulting in inflammatory cytokine activity. Thyroid malfunction also leads to hippocampus degeneration. The hippocampus is a small but important cross road from the primitive limbic system to  the temporal lobe of the brain and is critical in preserving short to long term memory.

If you suffer from brain fog, depression, and fatigue and would like a drug-free approach to solving these problems or you have not responded to standard medical care, we’d like to help.

The holiday season is a wonderful time for many people, yet for others it is a time of sadness. What most people don’t realize is that extreme happiness and extreme sadness can stress your nervous system the same. Research has shown that getting married and getting divorced causes EQUAL stress. Likewise, getting a new job and getting fired also cause the same amount of stress.

Psychologists estimate that an average American today has more stress in one week than his great grandparents did in an entire lifetime.  Either that or we are not as well equipped to handle the stress in our lives.  I’m not so sure which is more prevalent, but one thing is for sure – stress is multiple times greater on people today and the effects are not just emotional but pervade the entire Neurological, Endocrine and Immune Systems. Let me explain: excess stress impacts an extremely important neurological center called the HPA Axis (Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis) in a negative way. The HPA Axis is like the command and control center for the temperature, hormone, blood sugar, thyroid, detoxification, and intestinal  regulating systems. If this powerful master switch fails, there are so many body functions that malfunction. Under enough stress for a long enough time, even the strongest of individuals can lose integrity of multiple body systems.  Stress affects the sex lives of both men and women by lowering testosterone levels in men and estrogen levels in women. Stress leads to depression, fatigue, immune dysfunction and autoimmune conditions, weight gain, leaky gut, impaired detoxification, Insulin Resistance (Diabetes), memory loss, and the list goes on.

Everyone has too much stress at some time in their lives. Minimize the impact of stress and prevent chronic stress by: (1) getting a massage and a chiropractic adjustment – fast stretch of muscle spindles and joints powerfully enhance brain function (2) go for power walks and march like a soldier with exaggerated arm swing (3) Find someone who makes you belly laugh and laugh a lot  or watch a funny movie (4) enjoy fabulous times with your significant other (5) play with your dog or pet (6) listen to music (7) avoid sugar, caffeine, drugs, and alcohol  (8) take supplements that promote immune, adrenal, gut, and brain health (9) get enough sleep – very important (10) don’t procrastinate.
