Too much insulin flooding insulin receptor sites and not being able to bind (hyperinsulinemia) is a bad thing. Not only because of the risk of Diabetes, but because of other health effects including increase risk of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). H0w does it do this? It increases risk of High Blood Pressure, damages protein synthesis and coagulation, and interferes with lipoprotein metabolism. Due to insulin’s relationship with  sodium levels, when insulin levels increase so does blood pressure. As insulin levels drop, so does blood pressure. Insulin Resistance also interferes with breaking down fibrin protein which is intimately involved with coagulation (clotting).

Since high insulin levels are also associated with lipid metabolism abnormalities (think high cholesterol, high triglycerides, low good cholesterol (HDL), and high bad cholesterol (LDL), it is wise to lower it to avoid taking statin drug with the know serious side effects.Insulin Resistance is also associated with adrenal, thyroid, liver, immune, gut, and cognitive dysfunction. This is a serious problem that leads to Diabetes. Diabetes alone is projected by health authorities to break the American health care system unless drastic changes are made to eliminate this PREVENTABLE disease.

HYPOGLYCEMIA occurs when fasting blood glucose levels indicate low fasting serum (blood) glucose. Hypoglycemia is caused by poor diet (heavy carbohydrates, sugars, and skipped meals), low cortisol levels, low adrenal function, Hypothyroidism, and drug side effects. Symptoms include headaches, fatigue, shakiness, irritability if meals are missed, and sweet cravings.

SYNDROME X or Metabolic Syndrome occurs when fasting glucose levels are high (this is a pre-Diabetic condition. In Syndrome X, there is usually an accompanying decrease in good cholesterol (High Density Lipoprotein, HDL), elevation in bad cholesterol (Low Density Lipoprotein, LDL), elevation in triglycerides, and elevation in uric acid.  This is usually the result of a couch potato lifestyle combined with bad food choices. Symptoms include fatigue after meals and cravings for sweets.

Maintaining blood sugar balance (neither too high or too low) is necessary to be healthy and without it, not only does one have a risk of Diabetes but also breakdown of adrenal, thyroid, gut, liver, and immune systems.

Two separate studies (2008 on 13,000 women and 2010 on 28,000 women) indicate that cell phone usage while pregnant results in a statistically higher percentage of children with behavioral difficulties. If the children themselves used cell phones before puberty, the likelihood of behavioral abnormalities increased by 50%. The studies also confirmed that mom’s health habits especially the foods that she  eats affects the child’s food preferences. Mom’s who had trouble getting pregnant, suffered from Chronic Fatigue or Depression, had Autoimmune Disease, heavy metal toxicity, Diabetes, and a whole host of other conditions have also been shown to have a greater likelihood of behavioral and Autistic Spectrum problems.

Is it worth the risk? As with tobacco and “FDA approved” drugs, it may be a long time before the effects of electromagnetic frequencies (EMF’S) are fully investigated. Animal studies have shown that EMF’s in the same frequency as cell phones can impact liver, heart, endocrine, and muscle tissue and may even alter DNA. According to Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, a nervous system expert, this is exactly what is happening and the genes that “flip” as a result of EMF damage may cause Muscular Dystrophy and Developmental Delays.

A healthy regimen in pregnant women should consist of:

(1) Vitamin D3 ( 5-8,000 I.U.’s per day)

(2) Glutathione and Super Oxide Dismutase enhancing foods and supplements ( I use Oxi-cell from Apex Energetics and Protandim, both which are available in our clinic)

(3) Probiotics (healthy bacteria to fight the bad ones) ( I use Probiotic Perls from Intergrated Therapeutics or Strentgia from Apex)

(4) Omega 3 fatty acids (I use Brain E from Apex Energetics or Pure EFA from Integrated Therapeutics)

(5) Regular exercise

(6) Brain based chiropractic adjustments to ensure proper central nervous system integrity and prevent pregnancy related back pain

There are crucial relationships between the thyroid gland and the reproductive/endocrine systems in males and females.

In females, thyroid imbalances  lead to  pituitary-gonadal dysfunctions which include alterations in FSH and LH hormone coordination and release, ovarian FSH receptor site sensitivity, and peripheral progesterone receptor sensitivity. These imbalances lead to miscarriages, ovarian cysts, infertility,  migraines, weight gain, mood disorders, depression, and abnormal menstrual cycles. Sometimes the endocrine symptoms are so pronounced that the thyroid culprit is overlooked. Conversely, the use of synthetic hormones such as birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy (HRT), in addition to insulin surges and stress responses, lead to abnormal spikes of hormones such as estrogen, cortisol, and testosterone, which disrupts health thyroid function.

In males, thyroid imbalances can lead to pronounced  male hormone imbalances which include decreased testosterone, altered pituitary-gonadalfunction, obesity, exhaustion, cognitive decline, erectile dysfunction, and depression.  This clinical presentation will largely be ignored because the male hormone imbalances will obscure the thyroid culprit. Many men start taking synthetic testosterone which further disrupts thyroid metabolism.

At Brown Chiropractic  Neurology, we look for the root cause of ANY metabolic disorder. As you can see, sometimes the problems are not where the symptoms present.

If you have wondered if chiropractic natural nutritional approaches can help you, see a chiropractor or chiropractors. Better yet, see a chiropractic neurologist such as myself Dr. Scott Brown.

The holiday season is a wonderful time for many people, yet for others it is a time of sadness. What most people don’t realize is that extreme happiness and extreme sadness can stress your nervous system the same. Research has shown that getting married and getting divorced causes EQUAL stress. Likewise, getting a new job and getting fired also cause the same amount of stress.

Psychologists estimate that an average American today has more stress in one week than his great grandparents did in an entire lifetime.  Either that or we are not as well equipped to handle the stress in our lives.  I’m not so sure which is more prevalent, but one thing is for sure – stress is multiple times greater on people today and the effects are not just emotional but pervade the entire Neurological, Endocrine and Immune Systems. Let me explain: excess stress impacts an extremely important neurological center called the HPA Axis (Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis) in a negative way. The HPA Axis is like the command and control center for the temperature, hormone, blood sugar, thyroid, detoxification, and intestinal  regulating systems. If this powerful master switch fails, there are so many body functions that malfunction. Under enough stress for a long enough time, even the strongest of individuals can lose integrity of multiple body systems.  Stress affects the sex lives of both men and women by lowering testosterone levels in men and estrogen levels in women. Stress leads to depression, fatigue, immune dysfunction and autoimmune conditions, weight gain, leaky gut, impaired detoxification, Insulin Resistance (Diabetes), memory loss, and the list goes on.

Everyone has too much stress at some time in their lives. Minimize the impact of stress and prevent chronic stress by: (1) getting a massage and a chiropractic adjustment – fast stretch of muscle spindles and joints powerfully enhance brain function (2) go for power walks and march like a soldier with exaggerated arm swing (3) Find someone who makes you belly laugh and laugh a lot  or watch a funny movie (4) enjoy fabulous times with your significant other (5) play with your dog or pet (6) listen to music (7) avoid sugar, caffeine, drugs, and alcohol  (8) take supplements that promote immune, adrenal, gut, and brain health (9) get enough sleep – very important (10) don’t procrastinate.

If stress is making your life miserable – I’d like to help. Call Brown Chiropractic Neurology today at (303) 986-7600
