Brain degeneration and sleep

There has been an explosion in research on brain function; and, it is largely due to this rising number of Dementia and Alzheimer’s victims. New discoveries about the powerful effects of nutrients, amino acids, bio-flavinoids, and herbs are being published frequently. We now understand how bad guts, diets, adrenals, and blood sugar lead to inflammation and degeneration of the brain.  Improving our diet and exercise and decreasing stress, coupled with supplementing with specific nutrients, can put the brakes on brain inflammation and degeneration. By supporting the thyroid, we also support the brain. An unsupported thyroid almost guarantees some form of brain degeneration.

When the brain degenerates, the common symptoms include fatigue, brain fog, depression, and insomnia. Insomnia is associated with so many bodily breakdowns because almost all diseases lead to adrenal stress. Some insomniacs will never respond to sleep medications or natural remedies. The reason is that the root cause is not being addressed. Only by looking at a comprehensive history and examination which may include blood, saliva, and stool analysis can the right course of treatment begin.

Psychiatric drugs are a monetary windfall for the pharmaceutical giants. Have these drugs been proven valid, safe, or effective? The research leads to a simple answer – no. Unlike other drugs such as for blood sugar and cholesterol, psychiatric drugs have been not shown to have ANY measurable effects on neurotransmitter imbalances that are supposed to cause depression. In addition, placebos have been shown to work just as well. Psychiatric drugs kill over 40,000 people per year and cause adverse reactions in more than half a million.

There can be lethal cardiac side effects (New England Journal of Medicine, Jan. 2009, Journal of American Cardiology 2009) and anti-psychotic drugs can DOUBLE the risk of sudden death from heart attack.

Is being sad or blue really a sign of a “disease” condition or chemical imbalance? No, it is a functional problem that can usually be corrected with brain based therapies, diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes. Also, the normal grieving period after the death of a loved one is certainly not a disease in spite of the fact that the drug manufacturers would have you believe it is a Valium deficiency. The MIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) (1983) stated: ” There is no evidence that there is anything wrong in the serotonergic system in depressed patients”. In other words, it is not a chemical imbalance.

Just the (scientific) facts: (1) anti-depressants do NOT provide any clinical benefits to mild or moderate depression (2) all psychiatric drugs have known and unknown risks (side effects) including suicide (3) anti-depressants lead to relapses and worsening of depression (4) 25-50% of children who take anti-depressants for 5 years will become bi-polar (5) anti-depressants lead to Dementia and cognitive loss.

DR BROWN’S FINE TIPS ON STOPPING DEPRESSION

(1) Chiropractic Neurology – balance your brain with brain based exercises for hemisphericity (asymmetry of brain function). Safe, proven techniques that are tailored for your individual needs. These include visual, auditory, olfactory (smell), proprioceptive (exercise, chiropractic adjustments, massage, and vibration), and cognitive exercises.

(2) Eliminate stress or your body will be out of balance with your life

(3) Go out and play and come back at dinner time. Get plenty of sunshine

(4) Have one belly laugh per day. THAT keeps the doctor away

(5) Never leave (or stay) home without your Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’S). High levels of EFA’s are absolutely essential for depressed patients.

When we  see the beautiful/handsome models on television commercials advocating the necessity of taking statin drugs (Liptor, Lovastatin, etc.) to lower your cholesterol, one is seduced into thinking that cholesterol is bad, bad, bad. The truth is that cholesterol is a steroid hormone naturally and necessarily produced by your body, and it is life saving. Cholesterol is a powerful antioxidant and is responsible for making sex hormones and important neurotransmitters. You could not live without it! Statin drugs prevent your body from making cholesterol. Research now is suggesting that artificially lowering cholesterol through statins causes increases in blood glucose which is mistaken for Diabetes. Hyperglycemia or Insulin Resistance  is a pre-diabetic condition and this could be caused by your cholesterol medication. Add that to the other known possible side effects of statin drugs: (1) liver disease (2) myopathy  or muscle disease (3) Dementia (4) Depression (5) Pain (6) reduction of Vitamin D3 levels (7) Sleep Problems (8) suppression of natural Coenzyme Q-10 levels, just to name a few. There are over 900 studies and counting that prove this is a dangerous drug, so think very carefully about it. Wouldn’t you want to follow the Journal of American Medical Association’s own suggestions and the published findings in The Lancet (Feb. 17, 2010) and modify your diet, exercise, and lifestyle to  lower cholesterol as effectively without the side effects?

CAVEAT: If you are going to take statin drugs you MUST take supplemental Coenzyne Q -10 and vitamin D3

In my opinion, the ONLY group that needs statin drugs are those (less than 1 in 100 people in America) who have a genetic condition called Familial Hypercholesterolemia. These people cannot normalize cholesterol by natural means. High cholesterol is NOT the cause of heart disease. Two more important indicators are (1) the RATIO of total cholesterol to Triglycerides which should be 2:1 and (2) the level of  “good” cholesterol or HDL which should be 55 or higher. The public brainwashing by the media which is almost entirely supported by the pharmaceutical industry (and the resulting egregious conflict of interest) has resulted in statin drugs being the most profitable in the world. My father had normal total cholesterol levels his entire life and yet had coronary artery disease and severe heart disease. I didn’t know what I know now in time to save him. My mother had cholesterol levels as high as 400 and has no heart disease and is still alive at 86.

Dr. Brown’s fine cholesterol tips:

(1) Sleep 7-8 hours per night as if your life depended on it. Sleep deprivation leads to heart disease

(2) Drink alcohol in light moderation and thank you for not smoking!

(3) Get plenty of Omega 3 fatty acids in your diet and still supplement with mercury free high quality grades like we have in our office.

(4) Undress your stress and put it to rest. SO many studies on stress and its adverse effects on heart health

(5) Regular exercise aerobic and anaerobic. The heart muscles are designed to work and keep working.

(6) Cut out grains and sugars as much as possible and concentrate on the GOOD carbohydrates such and all colors of vegetables. Eat 20-30 grams of fresh organic fruit per day

It is never too late to protect your brain, however; Diabetes AND Alzheimer’s usually develop over a period of years, if not decades, before the very first signs and symptoms occur. Brain starvation occurs in Diabetes and Alzheimer’s Diseases and what most people don’t realize is that the brain manufactures it’s own insulin to convert glucose from the bloodstream into food for survival. When the brain stops producing insulin, it begins to starve. The same thing happens in Alzheimer’s where the brain atrophies leading to cognitive (memory), speech, motor, and personality changes. Diabetics have between a 50% -75% chance of Alzheimer’s Disease (WOW!). So pay attention because the research is quite clear that insulin resistance is connected to Alzheimer’s (no one yet knows how).

The good news is that there are food sources and supplements that can to improve brain function even after damage has occurred. Some of the heavy hitters in this category are: vitamin B-12, coconut oil, phosphatidylserine, acetylcholine, omega 3 fatty acids or krill oil, and a host of others that are specific to individual needs. Heavy carbohydrate diets have been shown to destabilize blood sugar and are therefore NOT good for brain function. A more appropriate ketogenic diet laden with fats and creams produces medium chain triglycerides which has been found to send ketones to the brain directly to produce fuel. It is now thought that ketones are the best source of brain food for Diabetics and Dementia patients. For instance, ketone producing coconut oil is a fat that acts like a carbohydrate without the negative effects on the individual insulin system.

Foods to avoid if you want to keep your mind sharp:
(1) Grains of ALL kinds (even organic). Sorry everyone, I know you like these for breakfast.
(2) Soy. Sorry again. So many people have been misled that un-fermented soy such as Tofu is good. See my previous blog.
(3) Artificial sweeteners of ANY kind including Splenda. A lot of you won’t like this. Aspartame is the baddest of the bad of these products and, although the mechanisms are unknown, studies on animals have shown that Aspartame impairs multiple memory functions, damages hypothalamic neurons, causes brain damage, mental retardation, and brain tumors. Don’t take the chance.

(4) Restrict sugar to 20-30 grams per day (even fresh fruits).  Along with grains, too much sugar is the greatest contributor to Diabetes

Optimize brain health and protect your immune system at the same time by:

(1) Regular exercise

(2) 5-10,000 I.U.’s of vitamin D

(3) Avoid anti-cholinergic drugs (Acetylcholine is an important neurotransmitter for memory, and certain drugs including broncho-dilators will block its positive brain effects)

The new buzzword in chronic health problems is AUTOIMMUNE and what that means is the body identifies it’s own tissue (thyroid, kidney, adrenals, etc.) as foreign invaders and starts attacking itself. Treatments of autoimmune diseases usually consist of treating the attacked organ rather than boosting the immune system. This is tragic. For instance, autoimmune thyroid is treated by prescription drugs for hypothyroidism (Synthroid, Levathroid, etc.) without any recommendations for improving immunity.

The first thing to do in building your immune system is to make sure your vitamin D levels are OPTIMAL not just adequate. Blood work is necessary to determine your levels and the laboratory range of 32 is not nearly enough. I like to see my patients in the 60 and above range. Another fallacy is that if you spend enough time in the sun, you will not be vitamin D deficient. We are finding that, even in sunny San Diego, landscapers who work outdoors in tank tops are deficient. Get yours measured.

Why is this vitamin D (actually it is not a vitamin but a hormone produced by cholesterol) so important? Because it can cut, by almost 50%, MOST of the most devastating and costly diseases of modern man – cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and dementia.

At Brown Chiropractic Neurology,.we optimize our patients chances of a healthy life with a complete functional blood work analysis which includes vitamin D levels. Visit us today at – browncnc.com. Ph: (303) 986-7600

Cholesterol is not only falsely accused of being a bad guy but is actually one of the best guys in the game. According to research, cholesterol is in every cell of you body and for good reason. Without it, you could not produce sex hormones, vitamin D, bile, etc. Get the picture-cholesterol is not only good, it is NECESSARY for health. Your total cholesterol is not an indicator of cardiovascular (CV) health. Rather it is the ratios of total cholesterol, HDL (good cholesterol), LDL (bad cholesterol), and just as importantly, triglycerides that determine CV risk. By artificially lowering you cholesterol through taking statins (google the side effects of Lipitor etc), you can cause inflammation leading to lowered serotonin levels, increased risk of cancer, depression, peripheral neuropathy, violence, and dementia not to mention liver damage. The only exceptions to this is a rare genetic disorder.

If you can’t bring yourself to go against big pharma and continue to take statin drugs, at least load up on high quality Ubiquinone (the most viable form of CO-Q 10) which restore the very important levels of CO-Q10 that the statin drugs have destroyed.

There is no controversy over this. Medical fact – statin drugs deplete CO-Q 10. Ask your doctor why he doesn’t have you taking it to counteract to effects of the statin drugs.
