Too much insulin flooding insulin receptor sites and not being able to bind (hyperinsulinemia) is a bad thing. Not only because of the risk of Diabetes, but because of other health effects including increase risk of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). H0w does it do this? It increases risk of High Blood Pressure, damages protein synthesis and coagulation, and interferes with lipoprotein metabolism. Due to insulin’s relationship with  sodium levels, when insulin levels increase so does blood pressure. As insulin levels drop, so does blood pressure. Insulin Resistance also interferes with breaking down fibrin protein which is intimately involved with coagulation (clotting).

Since high insulin levels are also associated with lipid metabolism abnormalities (think high cholesterol, high triglycerides, low good cholesterol (HDL), and high bad cholesterol (LDL), it is wise to lower it to avoid taking statin drug with the know serious side effects.Insulin Resistance is also associated with adrenal, thyroid, liver, immune, gut, and cognitive dysfunction. This is a serious problem that leads to Diabetes. Diabetes alone is projected by health authorities to break the American health care system unless drastic changes are made to eliminate this PREVENTABLE disease.

In part 1, we talked about the causes, conditions, and brain changes in Autistic Spectrum Disorders. Today we will expand upon these topics.

MISFIRING IN AUTISM
* poor body awareness
* retention of primitive motor reflexes which interfere with development
* poor social skills and abnormal emotions
* poor fine and gross motor skills
* poor eye coordination
* sensory processing problems
* rapid heart rate
* digestive weaknesses
* food sensitivities
* compromised immune system
* academic and cognitive problems

WHAT’S GOING ON?

* Once thought a social problem, it is now known to be a central processing problem
* Motor and gait abnormalities
* Distraction due to faulty sensory input
* Overwhelm due to lack of assimilation
* Communication problems with repetitive behavior (Perseveration)
* Causes: small brain areas in the parietal lobe, vermis of cerebellum, corpus callosum, anterior cingulate, and striatum.
* Increased Serotonin levels in the blood
* Abnormalities in inflammatory responses leading to social withdrawal,fear of new stimuli, and sleep disorders
* Abnormal rapid eye movements leading to inability to attend stimuli
* Averted gaze of human faces

ASSOCIATED SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDERS

* Strongly associated with autoimmune disorders in relatives
* Excessive innate immune responses associated with gastrointestinal disorders
* Deficits in postural stability, posture, balance, and eye movements
* Respond to negative emotion
* Decreased motor skills
* Can’t understand non-verbal communication
* Stereotypical behavior

If you have wondered if chiropractic approaches can help see a chiropractor or chiropractors or see a chiropractic neurologist such as myself, Dr. Scott Brown.

As stated in part 1, these conditions can be changed. This is not a lifetime sentence but it does require work. Call  us today at Brown Chiropractic Neurology (303) 986-7600. Proudly serving Golden, Arvada, Wheat Ridge, Denver, Lakewood, and Evergreen.

A popular “health” myth is that soy is great, soy is good. Traditionally, that may have been true. With  modern processed food, unfortunately it is not the case.

LITTLE KNOWN FACTS : (1) Phytoestogens (plant substances that have the same effects as estrogens), found in modern soy products, are powerful endocrine system disruptors (2) infant soy formula inundates the bloodstream with female hormones that inhibit testosterone levels associated with learning and developmental delays in boys (3) Soy fed girls go through early puberty (always a bad thing).

SOY DANGERS:

(1) Synthetic (toxic) vitamin D is added to soy milk. This increases the body’s need for legitimate vitamin D3.

(2) Processed soy protein produces cancer causing nitrosamines.

(3) Soy foods contain aluminum (toxic heavy metal) that causes kidney and central nervous system damage.

(4) MSG and other neurotoxins are added to soy to hide it’s unpleasant taste.

(5) Soy phytoestrogens can cause infertility and cause breast cancer.

(6) It is a myth that soy products increase your sex life, protect against heart disease, provide complete protein, or protect against cancer.

(7) Infants fed only on soy formula have receive the equivalent amount of estrogen as taking 4 birth control pills per day

If you carefully and painstakingly review the massive amount of  research on soy, you will reach the conclusion that the risks associated with soy far out weigh the possible benefits. The critical distinction that must be made is between the huge difference between fermented and non-fermented soy. The healthy Asian people who enjoy the benefits of natto, miso, soy sauce, and tempeh do so eating FERMNETED soy foods. It’s the un-fermented soy (containing genetically modified food or GMO’s) that is destructive to health and wellness. Sadly, the American public has been duped into thinking that tofu, soy milk, cheese, and ice creams are healthy.

Americans should eliminate soy products from their diets especially if they have:

– food allergies

-pregnancy

-kidney stones

-thyroid disorders

-autoimmune disorders

-fertility problems

-cancer

-brain damage

The detoxification process (a liver and gall bladder function) is a VERY important bodily process, especially for Americans and other industrialized nations suffering toxic overload from compromised foods, air, and water – just to name a few. Healthy detoxification is especially important when managing any chronically ill patient. Treatment of thyroid, blood sugar, adrenal, hormonal, cardiovascular, or immune disorders becomes difficult without healthy detoxification. Traditional  doctors recommend the same treatment or “one size fits all” for anyone whose blood work is outside a certain range. For instance, HRT or Hormone Replacement Therapy is recommended for everyone who has a hormone deficiency regardless of individual findings. If patients have detoxification issues causing their symptoms, using HRT or other drugs that utilize these pathways may exacerbate their dysfunctional metabolic pathways. For example, indexed scientific publications have demonstrated the adverse effects of impaired detoxification on chemical sensitivities, drug reactions, neurological disorders, autoimmune disorders, and chronic fatigue. If hepatic (liver) pathways are not restored, there is little hope of optimizing metabolic function again.

Natural agents that support Liver, Gall Bladder, and Bile function include: Milk Thistle, Panax Ginseng, Glutathione, Dandelion, Ginger, Vitamin C, Lecithin,  Phosphatidylcholine. These supplements can be purchased at health food stores. For liver problems, consult someone such as myself who specializes in functional metabolic problems. We can measure the results of  treatment with blood work and metabolic assessments. There are 4 conjugating pathways that must be monitored by the treating clinician: Methylation, Acetylation, Glucuronidation, and Sulfation. These processes are complex and require expert clinical support.

There are many liver and gall bladder cleanses out there. Some are appropriate and some are not. The best advice for someone who has metabolic problems such as a sluggish detoxification system, is to seek professional help.  I would like to help!

Sounds weird, but that is what the latest research shows. Insomniacs are near and dear to me. I was one of you and I can help. We need sleep to regenerate and repair. The brain-stem reticular formation has a top or rostral part and a bottom or caudal part. The rostral reticular formation allows one to wake and be alert. The caudal reticular formation allows us to sleep. There has to be a balance. When the rostral reticular formation is firing too high, one cannot relax and go to sleep. The rostral reticular formation is very sensitive to oxygen and carbon dioxide relationships. The reasons for high firing rostral reticular formation are many and complex. Stress (either psychological or disease of the body such as autoimmune disorders, blood sugar, thyroid, kidney, heart, liver, adrenal, or anemic conditions to name a very few) is usually the culprit. This is not to say that the person FEELS conscious stress but that a hidden stress may be altering sleep patterns.
What is different about chiropractic neurology’s approach is that we determine the root cause as opposed to just giving an herb or supplement to relax the patient. Yes, these things are a part of our approach, but brain-stem function must be addressed to fix the problem. Those loosing sleep on a regular basis are at risk of multiple health conditions, including but not limited to cancer, heart disease, and brain disorders.
At Brown Chiropractic Neurology, with brain based therapies, we would like to help.
