As we said, the thyroid has cross talk with every cell in the body.

EXAMPLE #1:  most people wouldn’t think of associating thyroid malfunction with cholesterol problems. Yet, when a thyroid is malfunctioning, the body makes more fat than it burns. This elevates cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL (low density lipoprotein or bad cholesterol). An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) makes for a sluggish liver and gall bladder where fat is metabolized and eliminated from the body. This causes the body to accumulate LDL. When blood chemistry indicates hypothyroidism AND abnormal lipid (cholesterol) panels, if the thyroid is normalized, the the lipid panel will often normalize without taking dangerous statin drugs.

EXAMPLE #2: notice that some active people gain weight while eating like a bird and they look over at their sedentary friends who can eat anything and never seem to gain weight. This makes sense if the person has hypothyroidism which slows metabolism and inhibits fat burning. Low thyroid function also shuts down receptor sites for lipase, an enzyme that burns fat. The inability to burn fat contributes to tiredness and food cravings. Low thyroid also inhibits human growth hormone production and therefore muscle wasting occurs.
