Studies have shown that thyroid hormones have effects on the quantity of systemic Serotonin levels. Serotonin is necessary to feel good and be happy. Thyroid hormones have been shown to increase bio-energetic metabolism in those suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD). Additionally, thyroid hormone activity has been shown to acitivate 5-HT2A serotonin receptors in the brain. This makes you feel good. Thyroid deficiencies lead to increased serotonin turnover (loss) in the brain stem as well as decreased upper brain (cortical) serotonin levels. These deficiencies lead to a global neuro-chemistry imbalance. Serotonin is also a messenger to the pituitary gland to release Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). When the messenger is lost the pituitary produces less TSH.

You see that there are feed back loops between the thyroid and the areas of the brain that produce neurotransmitters – in this case, Serotonin. Please call if you are suffering from MDD, fatigue, thinning eyebrows, brain fog, memory loss, hair loss, or cold hands or feet. It may be your brain/thyroid connection.
